On the lighter side.....

My introduction to a real Colonel. What does your dad do? "He's working on something called the B1" (75?) Later as she dragged me out the front door, her father said "where are you two going?" She says "fishing!", a wise man, he looked me right in the eye and says "Fishing for what??"
I liked him.

Still a valid question... by definition a Navy and Coast Guard Captains are allways “full bird”. It’s the other services with their “light Colonel” that need the “full bird” descriptor....

In both the USAF, the Army, and the Marines, "full bird" refers to an O-6. Likely because of the eagle insignia.

Those of us that were field grade officers (Lt Cols and Majors like me) were told our insignia was based on what the Greeks used to cover their private parts, as we field grade officers were often though to fit the description of male private parts....

What the heck is a full bird Captain?
The "Captain" of a ship does not nessasarily have the rank of Captain. The rank of Captain in the Navy does not always lead a ship, but is the equivalent of the "Full Bird" Colonel of the army and marines. To Call him a "Full Bird" Captain is to recognize his rank rather than any leadership position on a ship. Of course you can always give an officer a full bird, but I wouldn't advise it. OK, back to the funny stuff!
