He means that he didn’t “think” there might be rattlesnakes around and was just focused on all the pretty wild flowers! Drop your situational awareness and that’s when you get bit!

I never ran into rattlesnakes the 12 years I lived in Texas, but then again I wasn't wandering around the woods in March when they were coming out of their dens. Even so, I wouldn't have expected to find them in a field of blue bonnets. I can tell you I was very cautious were I stepped and where put my hand when I was around water..................
My three years in Arizona was a different story though. Most were Western Diamondbacks which are pretty well mannered. However, the Mojaves were aggressive and if a greenish colored Mojave got you, you were in trouble.
