On a Nitrite treated barrel do you do anything different to break in?

I would break it in before nitriding, establish an accuracy baseline, clean out all the fouling, Then send it in.

I have several treated barrels, like Jim said shoot them before the treatment. If the barrel is a dud you can still get it fixed. Once it has been treated no hope unless you have carbide. Adam

So if a new barrel has been nitrite treated skip any break in? I was thinking that might be the case. Thanks guys PG

I don't do a formal break in. I shoot a barrel and it tells me what I need to do. No use wearing out a barrel. Both of my current barrels have just come back from Melonite QPQ. One had shot a yardage in a match and the other was new.

I agree that the important thing is to determine if the barrel shoots well before sending it in for treatment: nothing you can do after that. Beyond that, I'd try to have as few rounds as possible before sending it in.

I recently had three done; a 6.5-284, 7x300 WBY and a 300 WBY. All three are somewhat hard on barrels so i wanted to add potential barrel life and corrosion protection. The 6.5 had about 40 rounds through it, the 7mm had ONE round through it and the 300 had three.

Both of the nitride shops I talked to said it was important to have at least ONE shot down the barrel. These barrels clean up a little better than a normal barrel. The 7mm and 300 clean up better than the 6.5. Maybe because they are bigger or maybe because they had LESS rounds through before nitriding.

Also, once you have nitrided the barrel, it is a permanent fixture, there is no way to change the chamber or throat- not even with carbide reamers. You might recrown it with cermet or something but not going to rechamber or rethroat.

Not sure who you are going to send it to but I would not send anything to MMI-trutec again as they change their policies without notifying the customer and don't really care too much about customer service. As of 30 days ago, they will only accept firearms related parts from a class 7 dealer who also has a Fedex or UPS account...

I have had excellent luck with them also, but I do understand where Dennis is coming from. Somebody posted the name of a guy that sends things to them in bulk. He charges $60 FOR A BARREL. i THINK HE IS IN gEORGIA. I understand Mimi Trutec's new policy, they should have not changed on Dennis though.
