I'm far from an expert and can't give any reasons, but a number of the custom barre Mfg recommend breaking in a barrel.Mike, I think you misread my post. Let me try again. What is in a barrel that requires break in? I'm speaking of custom barrels.
The closest example would be nearly all new engines recommend some sort of break-in. That applies to production motors and all out race motors.
Since breaking-in is a relatively simple process, I just do it and not worry about, what if.
