Olympic Shooting News

Today the Daily Bulletin has a story about centerfire pistol shooting in the Olympics in the early 20th century. Pistol shooting IS part of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, but not centerfire. The Women's Pistol and Men's Rapid Fire Pistol matches are still included in the Olympic programme. As are the Men's and Womens Air Pistol matches.

We have lost the 50m Free Pistol event this time, together with the 50m Rifle Prone match. I'm sure that other events will go as "wokeness" has been infiltrating the Olympics and other major sporting events.

25m Men's Rapid Fire Pistol Shooting

The next Commonwealth Games, to be held in the UK will not include any shooting events. Originally to be held in Durban, South Africa, it was moved to Birmingham, when South Africa would not provide funding/infrastructure and Birmingham stepped up,but suggested that there was no facility for shooting.

India, who have been successful in shooting events, threatened to boycott, but getting no support from other countries, so I guess it will go ahead anyway.

Such a shame it is heading this way, would have loved to see a sport like F-class make it's way into the Olympics.
Not going to happen. The physical element just isn't there; the traditional prone match allowed a sling and jacket but no rest. As a TV spectator sport, F-Class won't be any more engaging than the 50m prone.

The kicker is space. The 300m 3-Position event was dropped after the '72 Munich Games because it required too much space. A 600yd or 1,000 yard range (plus the danger area) is a huge and very expensive space to find near a major city. Combine this projected cost with the likely ticket sales, and you can see why it won't make the games. The provision if Full-bore facilities was apparently a factor in Birmingham dropping shooting from the 2022 Commonwealths.

Tim,

Bisley is only an hours drive from Birmingham. The reason shooting wasn't included was because of political correctness, nothing momore.
An hour, what in a helicopter?

As I understand it, Birmingham wanted everything on site, or at least very local. This was practicable for 10/25/50m, but obviously not full-bore. During negotiations, the various governing bodies (with the ISSF too) held out for a full programme, including TR at Bisley. The Birmingham Committee called their bluff.

Who cares, really ? The Olympics has evolved into another political circuis. People that represent the USA start disrespecting our country the moment they are selected for the team. I know it is only a few, but the fact they are not immediately removed from the team or have their medals stripped from them by the US Olympic committee is reason enough for me to have lost interest. Men competing as women now, ?

I will stick with scantily clad women playing Beach Volley Ball as my spectator sport of choice for now.

Well - here's why we should care.
It was the premier event for shooting for most countries. There's no PRS or IPSC action is the likes of India or Italy.

Those of us who live in places that don't have a constitution giving us the right to own a firearm have often relied on the Olympics and Commonwealth Games to provide a reason for firearms (especially handguns) ownership and competition. When New Zealand allowed pistols (early 80's?) it was originally those to ISSF spec., and the ISSF matches were the only "approved" competition. This did widen fairly quickly to Silhouette, which allowed larger calibres etc.

In the last tranche of handgun restrictions in Australia, only those to ISSF spec are now permitted. (max calibre 38, size restriciton etc) and while this did permit .38 Super/9mm etc, It has pointlessly curtailed the .40, 45 and magazine capacity. Some Aussie states also have "appearance"laws - if it looks like a semi-auto, it is a semi-auto- so many chassis rifles are banned. But that's another story. Hilary Clinton is on record praising Aussie gun laws.

The introduction of the air pistol and rifle events was intended to bring shooting events to countries where civilian firearm ownership is not allowed and add events to the Olympics. Instead, it has probably had a reverse effect to some extent, administrators preferring to run air events, as it is "easier" without the complication of importing and storing firearms , building ranges, and the PC factor. 2 Events were lost this year, 50m prone rifle and 50m Free Pistol.

The PC brigade often criticise the seperate Mens and Womens events. These were introduced to ensure that women were involved in shooting sports. You imagine that many countries would not allow women to participate. This has been taken a step further, by forcing 'mixed teams" of equal number of men and women, to the detriment of the sport, in my opinion, as it therefore removed an event. While it looks all PC and cuddly, half the competitors are left behind.

And , yes, we can certainly point to TV as the villains of the piece. The lack of knowledge and interest of the directors has not helped - but having said that, at the 2012 Olympics, the shooting finals were broadcast, and executed very well ( the footage is on YouTube), the electronic targets providing good pictures. Whether the audience actually knew what was happening is a matter of conjecture!

While ISSF shooting is a "minority" sport, please remember that it is shot is more countries than PRS, IPSC, NRA Action Pistol, Silhouette, Benchrest, and F-Class.

OK, so you care about the Olympics, and I still don't.

I recall when I was younger, the Olympics were covered extensively on most channels, the 3 or 4 there were. Now we have thousands of channels and Olympic coverage on one or two of them . Interest in the Olympics are dwindling, people would rather watch guys buy garbage out of a barn or watch naked people get eaten alive by bugs as they strive to make the days necessary to complete the challenge.

Sorry - I think that I agree with you - that the shooting sports and several others for that matter have been mishandled by the Olympics. And that has been to it's detriment.

I care. The Olympics used to mean so much more to people than they seem to today. It was about much more than personal achievement. It was about National Pride. Politics and “Correctness” has crept in way too much of our everyday lives. It’s to the point that if a person has National Pride, they’re considered to have something wrong with them. I don’t know if we, as a Country, will recover. But I’ll still watch the sports that I have interests in and root for our Olympians, as it’s still about “National Pride” to me.

That's pretty much my take, at least in the U.S. for its attempts at the Olympic Games. Since the silent fists-in-the-air statement in the '68 games to the boycott of the '80 games, including the last several ... there have been far too many individuals who've leveraged the "stage" to make their own personal ranting statements about whatever irks them most. As though the stage is theirs to employ in such ways. Defiles the whole meaning of the Olympics, which frankly is supposed to be a temporary exit from such mundane political crap. The simple challenge of sport, and the pursuit of excellence that brings all athletes together.

I still enjoy the occasional effort, from those athletes who are in that traditional mold.

Good lesson we got from high school sports, back in the day: the jersey has the team name on the front, and a simple number on the back ... to keep you mindful that it's the team that matters.

Thankfully, many athletes still treat it this way, without all the histrionics, trash talking and chest pounding. Thanks to them, it still has some meaning.

Not how I remember it then or now.

Exactly. I have not watched a NFL game since the first trator took a knee and suffered no consequences for that action. NBA,, never watched it. Olympics, don't care. They have simply joined the ranks of the political platform jerks.

When I watch sports, thats all I want to see, pure athletic effort. No politics, no causes, no political commercials. And I won't watch a sport that doesn't start until after the national Anthem being played because participants are disrespecting our nation in the process. If I want to see politics I can watch any news program.

It's bad enough I have to see cat food or famine hygiene commercials during dinner time.

Praise the Lord for the on / off button.

20-year-old Will Shaner of the Univ. of Kentucky just won a Gold Medal in 10m Air Rifle, setting an Olympic Record in the process. I have just released an extensive Feature about Will, with links to multiple videos:
