Old warhorse.. 81 years young

.220 Swift came out in 1935. Below is my recently rebarreled Swift on my original 1994 Winchester M70 HV. I burned out the original Schneider barrel and played around with a 13 twist Broughton in 28 inch length but did not get the velocity that the original 26" tube delivered. So I ordered up a Brux 14 twist HV profile, had it frozen by Kathy at Cryo-Plus and with a new reamer from JGS and 28 inch finished length have achieved my sought after speed of 4,050 with H414 and my favorite 55 grain Nosler BT's as original barrel delivered. This is breaking in the barrel and have yet to play with seating depth. 10 rounds for break in and no copper and very smooth. Chucks beware!

Oh boy!! I may have to buy tickets to watch this. Nothing like a good Swift or 22xc on the loose in a soybean or hay field full of chucks. ;-) WD

That is some very impressive velocity you are getting in the 55gr. bullets, especially with the low ES.

Let us know how it groups.

Got to love the old calibers. The new kids on the block are just trying to keep up. :D Got to love the Bruxs too. My most accurate barrels are Brux and my next one will be the same.

40X guy, That is a great looking rifle. You got me revved up on my old Ruger Swift again. I haven't been using it much as I'm trying to keep the round count down. Next time I go coyote hunting, it will be in my hands. Barlow

It would be interesting to shoot it first and then freeze it to see if there is any appreciable difference.

You'll be glad you did. I only had one yote ever take more than a step or two and he weighed just at 70lbs. Almost all of them were bang- flop..... folded up limp as a wet washrag.;) WD

Update: was getting good velocity numbers and ES's using Fed. 210 match primers with the H414 but 3 shot groups were not small enough although they were round with no flyers. Decided to play with some CCI primers and some Fed. 215 Match Magnum primers. Shot these 2 groups today without Magnetospeed hanging off end of barrel as I knew I had the speed part whipped. Group shrunk to minute of woodchuck with the mag primers pretty decent but bolt lift was a tad on the sticky side and temps today were 63 degrees. I'll back down on the charge of H414 a couple tenths and then chrony. Been playing around too much and have yet to hit the chuck fields. Grass is growing fast now. :)

Frank, looks good, I think you're onto to something there. I agree, don't think you want a sticky bolt @ 63 degrees. How temp sensitive is H414?

H414 is not one of Hodgdon's Extreme powders and in my experience you have to back off a couple of tenths in the heat of summer.

I have killed a few coyotes with my Swift and none ever moved anywhere but down. I built my X7 Marlin 6 Dasher a couple years back and have used it with great success. It's lighter and trimmer than my 77, and it's just handy. But there ain't nothing like a 220 Swift. Barlow

When it came time to order my custom made Cooper Jackson Game rifle, there was only one chambering that I considered.
The mighty 220 Swift. I'm chomping at the bit to get out in the field this spring, looking for the whistle pigs.
Here is a 320 yard head shot on a young one from last year.
