Old Savage trigger upgrade…what is your experience?

2-3 pound trigger on a hunting rifle???

I have several custom rifles that I've built with Trigger Tech trigger's set at 1.5 pounds, and I hunt with all of them. Not an issue. My Savage rifles with the SSS trigger's are set up the same way.
It's all on what you are use to shooting, and I'm the only one using my rifles.

At the risk of this spinning wildly off topic, for this rifle…yes. I also have hunting rifles with trigger weights significantly higher than 2-3lbs, but they are for different purposes.

Do you have a Savage replacement trigger experience you want to share?

Yes. Factory standard savage trigger at 2-3 pounds is well below what they are designated for.

Can they be? Yes. Should they be....especially in a hunting application? Probably not, IMHO.

I’m curious…what do you think the factory trigger should be adjusted to? Do you just shoot factory ammo too?

So, you have nothing better to do than attack me? wow..........

Why not buy an aftermarket trigger? Several others have offered their opinion as well.

Only posted my opinion......that is to NOT use an factory trigger.

I asked the question about how many adjustments were currently available with what you have.

Good luck.

I wouldn’t call it an attack. I would call it two legitimate questions. IMHO.

Keep messing with it and report back to your what your final fix is. I have 2 of those actions. One w basic ii and one lightened 3 screw trigger. both HB rifles. super accurate. There is one product out there that I think is just a new trigger. It seems to be a replacement trigger that is probably better made than the original trigger. that is the one I would try. maybe not too helpful and I am not sure which one it is. this product does not take it to the ounce level, but I think it is a superior trigger. I am sure someone on here knows which trigger I am thinking about? good luck and report back.

Forget the Rifle Basix II trigger. If you breath on it, it WILL go Bang when you least expect. Not for a hunting rifle!! Go Rifle Basix. ;)
If you bench shoot (like I do) you "might" get away with the Rifle Basix II but don't be holding your breath.

I think mine is basix ii, I could be wrong. My gunshmith didn't use the light trigger springs. it is set about 2 pounds. On a 7-08 heavy barrel. Very accurate with this set up. I will try to check which Basix trigger I have. On this site there is mention of PTG bolt replacement. I have not tried this, but I think it is a good idea. I am not 100% current on this topic. There is a Timney trigger (not a super light one) that I recalled being available.

Been going thru my old memories re my 10 flat top experience. I bought the basix ii. my smith installed it but did not use the included light springs. like recent post above, I decided I would use Basix i trigger and go from there. That said, the basix ii is about 2 pounds and I like it.

These Savage trigger threads are worth reading IMO, whether or not you have Savage rifles. To me it is interesting that Jewel or other high(er) end Co has not chosen to crack this nut. I am sure they have looked at it somewhat.....And no one apparently has tried to buy SSS trigger rights of production.

The reason what You have mentioned has not come about is, SAVAGE KEEPS CHANGING THINGS. Savage wants us to buy their rifles, not build off of them with aftermarket components. Savage has never supported aftermarket. When they switched to the Bottom Bolt Release, it wiped out the two fine triggers offered by Sharp Shooter Supply. Fred threw in the towel. If I don’t have this right He can correct Me. If Trigger Tech comes up with a great trigger, the same thing could happen to them.

I really appreciate everyone’s responses to my original question. At this time, unless something drastically changes with my rifle, I think I’m just going to hold steady with the original 3 screw trigger. As it is, it is dependable, safety works just fine, and it breaks cleanly at 2.75lbs (I measured it today because I really didn’t know…I just set it based on the reliable function of the safety ). For it’s purpose, I don’t know if another $100 or more for a trigger will be worth it at this time, but if I go that route I will let everyone following and contributing to this thread know.

Thank you!
