Old powder

Powder begins to deteriorate as soon as its made due to continuing acid reactions. Stabilizers like calcium carbonate are added to retard this reaction. A look at the MSDS for many powders will show presence of stabilizers. Store powder in a cool dry place. If brown fumes are seen or smelled upon opening the powder container dispose of the powder by burning small amounts on wet concrete.

I have some just opened RE19 in the old silver canister with the plastic pull out spout. I was thinking about using it in my 338 WM loads, but had questions about its age. Its storeage history has been very stable and it was unopened. I just broke the seal and took a sniff. Smells normal. Anything to be concerned about?
I bought an opened 1 lb. can of 7828 20 years ago and recently used it in a .300 W Mag and it performed according to load manual recommendations very well, velocity and accuracy that is.

Just finished the last of my Norma 205 from 1969. It was incredible in the .270 Win. It probably had the smallest standard deviation in velocity of any powder I've tried. Not sure how to replace it.
