Before the advent of the ridiculous 'Spell Check', we always proof read copy against the grain or from the end forward. You'd be amazed at the mistakes this simple process catches even in copy from professional writers.
I took a final exam in college where I proof read the test before answering all the questions. I circled the misspelled words then turned it in completed. The prof was extremely irritated that I had the temerity to check his test. He not only failed me without the benefit of the original grade (A) but wrote a comment to the effect that it had been run through 'Spell Check'. I protested the grade where the (A) was instated and the prof's contract was not renewed.
