Took an old load and gave it a new try.
Starts with the summer season and a need to keep shooting. So I pulled out my 223 that I use to shoot league with to use just to inexpensively keep up trigger time. Then I needed something to shoot thru it so going back over old load results and available components, I found about 400pcs of Hornady 62gr FMJ bullets from long ago and a load using TAC that did very well. So the load worked out to be these 62gr bullets with Rem primers and 22.7gr of TAC, seated to a length of 2.280".
These shot well back a few years ago and this same charge did excellent with the 60gr, VMAX. So I thought I would load a bunch because, I have plenty of bullets and pounds of TAC.
Previously, when I was starting with the 223 I was shooting 69gr bullets and was using TAC for powder along with a number of others. I thought I had a very good load worked up with a 69gr Nosler until one day I shot and the temps were near 90* and the load completely fell apart. So I abandoned it.
Now back to this load with the 62gr bullet and the 22.7gr TAC. The first time I tried it was while working at 200yds and the temp was 86*, shot 10 rounds and quit! They were all over the place.
A week later, temps at 74*. Only this time fired at 100yds. First two shots were into the 3" stick on bull, only high, right at about 3oclock. Made 2 more adjustments ans was sighted at center bull about .250" right so I left it.
I was doing this while working at my RO job and I got busy so I had to stop. About 2hrs later the range cleared out an I was able to resume and but the next 5 shots in one large hole by 4 rounds and 1 shot just broken of that group so it wasn't touching.
Lesson from this. Don't shoot this powder above 80*. So as long as I am below that temp I should be able to shoot this load fairly reliably. Friday I am back on the 200yd range so I can retest this again also. BTW I figure the cost of components for this load is right around .22Cents
