Old Army shooters

Well, I'm old, was in the Army during those years, and retired after 20 years, and I shoot VFS. Does that fit the bill?

Dennis

Small bore team Friedberg, Germany 1968/69. I shot both rifle as well as pistol. Had a great coach from TX.
Met some great people and have fun too!

Ft Campbell KY in 68 where we did 800 with iron sights all day long, then off to the greenland of the south where I honed my skills with one other guy who tagged along. Never so scared in my life but that's probably why I'm still here. Never shot on any formal teams, but taught Basic Marksmanship at Ft Leonard Wood as a DI for a year and a half. Always loved the ones who had never held a 'gun' before. So easy to teach. Hated those guys who had 'hunted all their lives'....so far. Any of that count?

OH yes, that counts big time! Sounds you had a great time too?
You may like the movie called Forest Gump!
Thanks for teaching all the young boys how to shoot straight.
Did you get to play with the NM M-14?

OK, Walt, you found a few. Now watcha gonna do with 'em?
I go back to 58 - 59 so I wouldn't quality.
Just to say hi and let the old boys know that I'm still here.
It would please me to have some of the old time shooters share what they learned with the younger shooters before then ship off.

Walt, the most resounding thing to me was the NM M1 with RA match ammo, amazing to get 17-18 V's at 600 with iron sights and a 250 score.
my first outing with the M1 was in basic at Jackson shooting to qualify, after standing completed I had a tap on the shoulder, a LT indicate the Col wanted to see me, - boy you on the rifle team.

Good old country boys?
You were luck to have had a good commander too!
My BN commander did not like me and was pissed when Nixon offered to promote me from PFC to Major at the age of 21.

EVERYTHING was M14, but I did get to work with a n NM for awhile. After I started tagging stuff at 600 and 800 with those beat up basic rifes, they gave me a toy to work with that was more capable than I was. My issue was my eyesight. I had perfect vision, but at 800 those flipper targets were getting very very hard to find and in low light shadows impossible. Put a black silhouette against a green background in the shade then move it to 600-800 yards. Yowza that was impossible.

I met an eye doctor at Camp Perry that sold me an optical insert that was yellow and adjusted for my eyesight. I felt like I was cheating because it help too much.
If you get the clear one there is no way to tell it is in there.
Yellow would have helped you see better between the colors green and black.
Not sure how to find that eye doctor today?
Old shooters need all the help we can get.

Walt the thing that got me the most was the dust, high wind and sand at Gordon and Jackson - no grass or brush -the target would actually disappear for a time then you had to rush. my coach taught me the system of rhythm - the dust would break the rhythm and then you had to hurry. I still sense that rhythm when shooting today.

My only rhythm story was learning the pulse rates and creating my figure 8. Once I got that down, I built my confidence from knowing. But as in most things, practice makes near perfect. I must have over a 100,000 rounds down range by now counting the RVN days. Recently though I have gone away from the .308 due to not liking that recoil and settled into a .223 bolt. Getting older suks.

Charlie Lewis and Lionel Lowe taught me standing trigger control for the NM M14 by shooting a Daisy Red Rider BB gun. Just when you got it down - they would oil the trigger and change everything. They also taught me how to build NM M14.
