Anybody here from oklahoma? Its one state Id like to spend some time in. Curious about the hunting ( mostly varmint) around the tulsa area. Looking at summer time varmint hunting actually. Ive got 4 weeks of vacation to burn and open to anything really so Id love to hear of any suggestions! Thanks!

Howdy !

I’ve been living a couple miles NE of Broken Arrow, which itself lies just East of Tulsa...... for the past 10yr.

I have not made a concerted effort to research the local varmint situation, but have seen dead groundhogs on the road, on occasion. Have read that OK PD’s have been plagued out. Did note a good size town right @ the first toll booth coming into Ok from Wichita Falls, TX.... but that was a few years ago. The country side is predominently ranching oriented. OK does have some cash grain farming, but the closest a I’ve seen in NE along I-44

Lot’s of good gun stores here about. At least one carries an often unbelievable assortment of powder, including 8lb jugs of hard to find stuff.

Tulsa hosts 3-gun nation shoots, and the U.S.’ largest gun show 2X yearly.
Open carry here ( at least for residents ), and not one county went with Obama.

Route 66 runs right through Tulsa, so is some “ Mother Road “ related sites here about. Annual “ Chili Bowl “ indoor sprint car competition is held in Tulsa, too. This is the Indian Nations, so lots of casinos sprinkled throughout the state.

WX can get pretty stimulating. We set a record of 105 tornadoes last year. I was within 1.5mi of 3 different ones within a 5 day period. My house was between 2 that we’re cruising through at the same time.... one 1.5mi to the SW, while a second was a scant 1/2 mi to the North.

I hope to retire this year, and with that expect to have more time to shoot, especially to scope-out the groundhog situation.

Sorry I don’t have better intel on local varminting.

I forgot about the tornados, guess its no worse than all the fires where Im at. Does broken arrow typically see alot of tornados?

Last place I'd want to live is McCurtain County, OK. If there's a tornado warning anywhere, it always includes McCurtain County. (S/West corner of OK)

Looking on zillow, theres a ton of new homes being built in broken arrow. Did they get ripped apart or expansion? On the plus side, from what I can tell, the fishing looks pretty awesome there!

Howdy !

Did not mean to over-emphasize the local tornado occurrences.
The average for OK per year is 45. Last year, we had 105.
You can have the smaller ones like EF0 - EF1 drop down from the leading edge of approaching storm fronts w/ no warning. Local Tv stations send out “ storm monitors “ on the order of 4 per severe weather event.
Helicopter coverage, and so forth. So, advance warning is usually quite adequate; when they are watching potentially violent super cells already.
The day Moore OK got hit it was dicey around here ( Moore is SW of Tulsa).
It was also touch-n-go around here the day El Reno took a hit, and also the day Joplin got hammered (El Reno is Just West of OK City, and Joplin is on the SW to NE typical storm track.... to the NE of us.

Oakley commented about humidity. It is not all that humid up in the Broken Arrow area, usually. I came from NE Indiana, and you had to cut a hole in the Summer air, in order to be able to shoot ! Oakley is from the
“ Squatchie “ part of OK..... hilly, forested, lakes; and known for getting more rain than we do up here. We have a time share in Scottsdale, and I have seen it get just as dry in Broken Arrow. IMHO - it is usually not what I would call “ humid “, here.

I DK whether you might be bringing along someone with you, but wanted to mention...... the lady that is featured in the “ Pioneer Woman “ show has her “ Merchantile “ and restraunt set up in Pawhuska, OK. 5 star food, and shopping for the ladies. Just outside of town is the “Tall Grass Prairee“
where the U.S. largest concentration of Buffalo can be seen.

Forgot to mention previous that the largest private collection of firearms in the world is the J. M. Davis museum up in Claremore....about 15mi North of Broken Arrow.

You mentioned fishing. They have an annual bass fishing competition that comes to NE Oklahoma early in the year. You can check out the map to see these.... like Grand Lake, Lake Skiatook, Ft. Gibson Lake; et al.

Oops -

The computer auto changed my typing of “ Oakie “ to “ Oakley “, and I did not catch it right off. A thousand apologies.

Thanks for all that 357mag! Im trying to convince the wife to atleast check it out, but she wants nothing to do with tornados, not that I can blame her haha. Are there any good shooting ranges in the tulsa area?

I shoot @ the “ Happy Hollow Gun Range “ , which is close to Kellyville, OK.
300yd Max.

I haven’t felt the need to go elsewhere.

And..... I regret having brought up the subject of tornadoes ( in OK ).
Not as bad as I many have made it sound. Again, many apologies !
