An AS friend invited me to spend a day or so shooting PD's in OK if I ever got back out there. Last week my bride and I went to OK to meet our new grand daughter (not a subject of this post) and then after a few days visiting, wandered another five hours west to the panhandle for a reunion with Mark R. It had been since 2016 when he first took me out on a PD shoot.
I took my 40XB 222 clone, with a pile of 50 grain TNT tipped rounds, Leupold 6-18. I also took my TC Contender with a 17 FB barrel and a 22 K Hornet. The 17 has a 6-18 to match the Duece while the K sports a Weaver T10.
Day one was spent mostly alone, with my bride keeping count of my misses. 25 MPH cross wind with no opportunity to move to take advantage of shooting into the wind. I shot about 25 percent success over 200 yards to 300. The 222 ruled, the FB was ok and the K-Hornet with 33 grain Vmax was a complete failure! Late in the day the situation downrange changed and I was able to shoot with the wind. Success went to 80 percent to 275 yards. My friend did some chores on the ranch then we moved to a spot for an evening hour long shoot to 250 yards. I went 16-18 with the 17FB while my host cleaned up with a 20-222 shooting 35 grain Bergers. WOW I was impressed. Seems like the near perfect round for PD's. Flat, fast and still mild on barrels.
Day two was a bust for shooting, but very pleasant visit with my friend. 40 MPH winds put the dogs down, and what ones I saw I missed....a lot wide.
I have fallen in love with his little desolate community. And I am grateful for Mark's generosity, and his hospitality to a Yankee.
Photos show the elusive Snert on the McFadden tripod, and Mark playing heck using just a balled up shirt off a table. Heck of a shot he is.
