OK PD shoot

An AS friend invited me to spend a day or so shooting PD's in OK if I ever got back out there. Last week my bride and I went to OK to meet our new grand daughter (not a subject of this post) and then after a few days visiting, wandered another five hours west to the panhandle for a reunion with Mark R. It had been since 2016 when he first took me out on a PD shoot.

I took my 40XB 222 clone, with a pile of 50 grain TNT tipped rounds, Leupold 6-18. I also took my TC Contender with a 17 FB barrel and a 22 K Hornet. The 17 has a 6-18 to match the Duece while the K sports a Weaver T10.

Day one was spent mostly alone, with my bride keeping count of my misses. 25 MPH cross wind with no opportunity to move to take advantage of shooting into the wind. I shot about 25 percent success over 200 yards to 300. The 222 ruled, the FB was ok and the K-Hornet with 33 grain Vmax was a complete failure! Late in the day the situation downrange changed and I was able to shoot with the wind. Success went to 80 percent to 275 yards. My friend did some chores on the ranch then we moved to a spot for an evening hour long shoot to 250 yards. I went 16-18 with the 17FB while my host cleaned up with a 20-222 shooting 35 grain Bergers. WOW I was impressed. Seems like the near perfect round for PD's. Flat, fast and still mild on barrels.

Day two was a bust for shooting, but very pleasant visit with my friend. 40 MPH winds put the dogs down, and what ones I saw I missed....a lot wide.

I have fallen in love with his little desolate community. And I am grateful for Mark's generosity, and his hospitality to a Yankee.

Photos show the elusive Snert on the McFadden tripod, and Mark playing heck using just a balled up shirt off a table. Heck of a shot he is.

No, my second. First was in 2016. This was a bit more casual and not as intense. Last time was in light winds, a few weeks later in the year and the kill/shot ratio was at 70 percent with 256 DOA in 8 hours, shared by myself, my son and 14 year old daughter. She shot the 222, I shot the K hornet, my son shot a 17HMR

Your previous trip story came up down below in the Similar Threads list so it was easy enough to get the background. Looked like a great trip both times. Awesome to hear about folks on here getting together and having a great time in the fields, especially when the young folks play along. They will remember you and Mark for this when they have their own. Well Done and thanks for the post.

Snert -

Howdy !

What desolate community in NW Oklahoma were you operating close to ? Just curious.

It was fun despite being a bit breezy! First day 25\30 mph, Friday was 45+...
Didn't get to spend a whole lot of time visiting but the quality time was awesome. Don't let ol Snert fool ya, he's a fine shot

Except for Guymon, I think most communities out in the panhandle would be desolate. I travel that road many times during the year. Nothing to stop a cold wind except a barbed wire fence.

Been going to that area for over forty years and always had lots of pdogs to shoot until three years ago.Drought and plague really reduced the numbers but making a comeback in some towns

I should be clear. I use the word desolate in a VERY appreciative way. While I was there (stayed in a little hotel, ate in the local pizza place, had subs from Subway) it seemed by day two everyone knew me. Went in for coffee and the gal at the counter said "Where is your wife?' cause my bride had waited in the car. Best thing of all? NOT ONE PERSON asked me if I had my shots! But the hotel owner asked "How was the shooting?" MY kind of place!

It was VERY hard to be back in neurotic North East USA where the FIRST conversation I had upon my return to work mentioned Covid twice and then asked me if I had my shots!!!!!!

And I think Mark is gracious. I know I put one across his bow to pop the second of a double on his side of the center, using the tripod, then realized he probably isnt used to the close quarters entry work I was used to practicing in my past life. Bad habits...my public apologies, Mark. You are a great host. and little P says she is smoking jealous I got to go and she didn't.

It is a pleasure for me to visit in that area as well, maybe more of a privilege. At the local restaurants and coffee stops I have got to know by “face” quite a bunch of fine folks. Always met with a warm welcome and a handshake.

I just said that to a friend yesterday. You go out in the country and it's like before they blew up the world.

God's world is unchanged. Man and his world has become twisted and ugly.
