OK 6mm Ackley + Savage Target Action Good Route???

Alright, I posted a couple days ago about building a custom 243 AI on a Weatheby Vanguard, but decided to nix that. . . . .

The 6mm AI seems to be just the ticket

and

What do you guys know/think of the Savage Target actions?

Good combo? still undecided on bullet weight and barrel, will be making a laminate stock for sure. . . .

THOUGHTS???

The 243 AI and 6MM AI are well known for short barrel life.

Shootist

When all else fails "Get the Blue gun"! The Blue Gun is a 243AI based on a Remington 700 short action. One in eight twist Shillian barrel, Silhouette style stock topped with a Leupold 8.5x25 long range scope.

MY son and I picked the 243AI because it was a perfect fit in the short action and Lapua brass was available. Many, many Wyoming antelope have fallen prey to the Blue shooting 95 grain Nosler combined tech bullets. We enjoy the round so much there is also a custom 243AI pistol in the safe that produces 243 rifle ballistics out of a 15 inch barrel.

Long live the 243AI.

They need to be trued up just like any factory action. Why not just jump in and get yourself one of the custom made Remington clones and be done with it? When its all said and done, you will only be out a few more bucks. You will have a better platform to start with and many more choices when it comes to accessories. As to the 6AI, its a great long range chambering.

The smithing will all be done by me, so saving money is better than wasting time. And the Savage Action is sub $500, anything else fall into this category? Well anyhoo, I think the 6mm AI is goin to be just peachy,

What weight bullet do you guys recommend with this cartridge?

If twas me, I'd build a 6BR or one of the improved BRs,eg 6 Dasher) on a one of the custom actions that will accept a Remington-type Jewell trigger.

I had a 243 AI on a Post-64 M70 w/ a Douglas air gauged barrel that I'd grown up hog hunting with. Started shooting local "groundhog matches". 3 shots, 3 known distances,100,200,500 or 100,300,500) to 500 yards, worst edge. Gotta put three completely inside the white bull in the 'hog's head at 100 to have a prayer.

Bubba, I got tired of getting whipped by guys shooting the 6BR,and one character shooting a 22BR)!

So, I built a 6BR on a Viper with 8 twist Bartlein barrel, Jewell trigger in Tracker stock topped with a Weaver T36.

I like the BIB 95, Berger 105 VLD and Clinch River 106 VLD. I like Reloader 15 for powder.

I'm an engineer. Not big on swimming against the tide. The more widely supported a solution is, the better I like it.

YMMV.

Well heres for swimming against the tide!

I ordered a Savage Target Action today, right bolt left port .308 bolt face

BTW I am building a 264 win mag sporter rifle too, much to the dismay of the 7mm mag lovers!!

I went a somewhat similar route a few years ago. I built a 6mmAI on a standard Savage long action, Pac-nor 10 twist, and put it in a joel russo A5 laminate stock. I used the 10 twist specifically for the 87-95 grain bullets and had a lot of fun with it. If a 6mmAI is what you want, then go for it and don't let anyone talk you out of it.

Did you get the newer style single shot large shank action? Or the older style action? What make of barrel and stock will you be using?

As far as I know it is the newest style, large shank single shot, super duper accutrigger, right bolt left port. . . .

I will likely use the same twist but maybe I'll go a little faster to make use of the 100-107 grain bullets, but I dont know, what do you guys think?

I will be doing all the smithing myself and am split between Douglas SS, Hart SS, and Kreiger SS barrels, going to be pretty loong.

The stock I will likely build my own from a Laminate blank, color undecided, is a vastly cheaper and more attractive alternative to the high end McMillan stocks

Go with a 8 twist for the heavy weights and you'll still be OK with the lighter ones..
Kreiger is the best of the ones mentioned, but don't discount, Lilja, Bartlein, and especially Pac-Nor.....
I don't plan on ever not having a 6mm AI fast twist in the safe......

I have had a 6AI for several years.Darrel Hollands built mine off a Winchester 70 action. It is a 1-12 twist.I When I re barrel it it will be a 6 BR.Why? Making the AI brass waste my time, barrel life is somewhat short if your a top accuracy nut.The 6 BR will do it all with better accuracy and barrel life.

The 6mmBR is a good way to go! I got my left port right bolt Savage Target in the mail this week...My 31" Brux 1-8.4" should be here in a few weeks...I also have a factory Savage laminated BR stock for it. This will be used for F-Class open at Butner...600-1000 yds. I am going with a 6Dasher for this one...

I already have a Savage 6mmBr...that I am going to set up to shoot 600 BR at Piedmont...

***Also just got my 6mm SuperX together...that I will be deer hunting with this year...108 Berger BT's...or 105 A-Max's___

A 1-12" twist in 6BR will be fine for lighter bullets say up to 90's...I saw a guy turn in some very impressive groups with his varmint rifle a month ago at Piedmont Gun Club...He shot a 1.3" 5 shot group at 600 yds... using the 80? Bergers...
