Ohaus beam scale

Ok guys I have been reloading for a long time.I have tried all the cheap beam scales that there is.Tired of them all.I work on the cheap side of everything.Could get the fx 120i but not real serious about perfection if you know what I mean.I do like my scales to be pretty accurate, so decided to try the new Ohaus 10 10 that I have seen on Amazon. Now be honest with me.Are they worth a crap or am I just chasing my tail again and should I just wait until a rich uncle leaves me enough money to buy the fx?
Your thoughts appreciated.

This last weekend at our small town gun show, I saw many older RCBS/Ohaus/Dillon/Lyman/Pacific/Redding beam scales that were being sold for around 30 -50 bucks. They are older, American made functional and accurate scales that everyone should have at least one of. I'd much rather have one of these, and a few standards to check it with, than one of the new Amazon scales. jd

Wait on the rich Uncle. Until then get a hold of Scott Parker for one of his tuned beam scales and that will keep you accurate until your Uncle croaks. I got a cheap web cam ( Amazon ) and aimed it at the pointer of the beam and it made the whole experience much better running it through the laptop.

Rick

I purchased a 60’s Onaus Lyman M5 off eBay for 40. Scott Parker has it now, the total is 165. But between the scale and the omega auto trickler, 350 total. I have been told I will get single carnal accuracy and it’s automated. I don’t have to stare at the scale. Kind of like the Adams system but “not-as-cool”

Look for a good used RCBS/Ohaus 5-10. All 5-10's were US made, they were discontinued before manufacturing was moved to China or Mexico.
They have all the same features as the 10/10, the approach to weight spring and rotary barrel poise etc, in fact the beams are interchangeable.
Best value at the moment but prices are heading up.

If you had a decision to make on the M5or the 10 10 which would be better?
Thanks everyone
Jim

They are both very good (I have had and used both). I believe Scott Parker has said he prefers the M5. He works on both, I don't think you can go wrong with either one. If you go the 1010 route be sure it's an older American made one vs the one that was made in Mexico or china. and I believe that's hard to tell.

Personally I would choose the M5 every time, they're more sensitive than the 10/10 and the barrel poise, although handy can cause inaccuracy, especially when they have had a fair bit of use.

I bough a used M5. I leveled it and made some adjustments to the zeroing weights in the pan holder and it is awesome. That is the only tuning done to it as far as I know but it weighs accurately and I can see 1 kernel of powder move the pointer. I use it with a Dandy Auto Trickler and it works great.

I have not seen one in person, but there are a lot of signs pointing to the conclusion the Ohaus reloading scales on Amazon are fake. That doesn't mean they're bad, but buyer beware.

My thoughts on these new 10/10 scales.
I would guess they are made in China in the same factory that has been producing the 10/10 and 505's for RCBS, using the same castings, machinery and materials as has been produced for the last 7-8 years. Once RCBS dropped the 502,505 and 10/10 they switched suppliers and introduced the two new scales, the M1000 and M500, again both made in China.
The original factory, already jigged up to make 505's and 10/10's, possibly with a good stock of parts, just decided to keep on producing them, certainly using up existing parts. All patents for these scales are long out of date. The only problem I can see is they are actually selling them as "Ohaus" scales, so I would think they must be made under licence with Ohaus's blessing.

I would guess they are every bit as good (or bad) as the Chinese production for RCBS as it has been for the last few years. (Without the advantage of the RCBS warranty)

I like the 5-10 better myself I had 3 10-10's and kept going back to the 5-10 so I like the 510

the lighter green color 10-10 is what you want if they are dark green run run

If you check someone else asked this question about the Amazon scales not to long ago... I think the replies were about the same as these...

Quite possible. I wouldn’t assume that they have Ohaus’ blessing though. The scales are not on the Ohaus website. If they are willing to steal the trademark, who’s to say that they don’t substitute cheaper materials? This is just speculation if course. But amazon is chock full of counterfeit goods from China and amazon does not have a handle on it. This *could* be just another one. I think it’s telling that the only places you can get them are Amazon and eBay.

Don't count on having a blessing from Ohaus. There are a LOT of counterfeit things coming over that are branded with a quality name. Try to take someone in China to court.

Amazon probably has a contract with OHAUS to produce and sell the scales. It still contains the words "Manufactured by OHAUS Corporation". Ships and sold by Amazon.
