30-40 Krag build by Mel Johnson, after his retirement from the USMC. He opened a gun shop in Rhode Island.

From Mel's son, Ed Johnson:
Very nice photos. It would appear that this would have been a conversion of a Springfield Armory 30/40 Krag action with Springfield rear sight plus new custom stock with pad plus tapered barrel....I think you said 30:06?.....and blued components with new front sight...maybe Lyman?

It would have probably been a custoer's rifle conversion, done by my Dad's factory and not the subsequent "associates" group. Not sure of value but it would be pretty rare....call it perhaps a "one of a kind."

Went to a few ground hog shoots last summer and was invited to a 600 freedom shoot (member at the club lent me a gun and rests), needless to say I was hooked. I can’t wait for spring to get to shooting

It just struck me I've been too busy practicing with Team Cheap Bastard's new F-class rifle. A factory CZ-600 Range Plus in.308 with a Nightforce 'scope. Shoots as well as my old franken40X and the stock is far more comfortable. Looking forward to more practice and some weekend 1000 yard shoots this spring after it warms up.

I normally use a Protektor front rest - the bipod is an inexpensive substitute for a gun cleaning rest.
