Offended A Friend

I know most people, probably close to 99% here, reload their own ammo, but do any of you ever make it a habit of shooting someone else's reloads? A friend of mine graciously gave me 200 rounds of some 223 shells that he reloaded. He was extremely offended when I declined to accept them. I told him I just don't like shooting other people's handloads. He still didn't seem to understand. I told him it was just a safety concern that I had. What's your opinion should I just have accepted them, and just put them away and never shoot them or disassemble them?

I never , never let anyone shoot my reloads or shoot anyone else's .
No exception.

Yep, same here. Even if you trust him, you don't want to have to put a friendship at risk on the chance that he loaded an empty or double charged a case and you end up with a kaboom.

You did the "right" thing especially if your 223 is built on a mini action that might be weaker than larger actions that can handle a bigger callbre.

Only offense that I seen was something I shot better then they did .

That actually says it all. Its boils down to a safety issue in my book. Most of us are very critical about our reloads which are tuned (through testing), to our individual weapons. Sure we sometimes buy across the counter ammo for hunting or general plinking. But we also know that those loads meet SAAMI specs, but our personal loads push the limits as we seek excellence and accuracy, not a ball park figure. I would try and explain those facts to your friend and hope he understands. We may swap components with our buddies, but I have yet to swap any completed and finished rounds with anyone, including my Gunsmiths or fellow competitors.

Had the classic example just yesterday. At the range with a guest, and a gent that I have had friendly conversations with several times before offered my guest some of his loads in .270. He had just finished telling me how great they shot in his rifle and what great velocity he was getting "without any pressure signs". He then quoted the velocity to me, a full 200 fps over any maximum load I had ever heard of before. We politely declined for safety issues and he did, in fact, agree that perhaps it would be better not to try them.
Everyone good and everyone went home in one piece.

OK, I'll be the bad guy here. I have shot my shooting partners ammo, but in his rifle! We were trying to diagnose if it was the shooter or the system. He routinely makes ammo easily as good or maybe better than mine, (we are talking about 90+ years of combined experience here) but his rounds don't fit my chambers as well as my own.

There maybe is a non offending out. Just claim that you have a tight neck turn chamber & his ammo won't fit. That'll work, unless he demands you try to chamber his.

During a prone L.R match the R.O , noticed something amiss with one guys ammo. The guy had his rounds stored point down in his ammo box, the primers looked like they were coated in something. The RO pulled a couple of rounds from the guys box and told him to cease fire. The Q & A revealed that the guy had coated the primers with Araldite because the primers were really loose.
No point being stupid unless you can prove it, I guess.

Thanks for all the replies makes me feel much better for declining them. I'll just have to figure out how to do it in a manner that doesn't make him so mad next time. I like the idea of the tight neck chamber.

What is Araldite? I heard rumors of a well known and successful shooter (now deceased) that used to use "Super Glue" (cyanocrylate) on his primers.
