Off topic-FN pistol in 5.7X28

Grandson purchased one with a box of FN ammo. It won't fire the round. It does cock and releases the firing pin. For some reason they enclosed a fired round. Comparing it to the new ammo it looks seriously longer than the new ammo from the base to shoulder.
I'm thinking the factory ammo that we purchased is so short that the firing pin is just pushing the cartridge forward.
Anybody seen this?

I have had one for several years with no issues, really like the pistol . Not sure what is going on with yours but I can check it out if I can help you in anyway? Sounds like a chamber issue? I'm using FN ammo also

Hey Butch! If you want I can send you a few fired cases to compare to your own. I have one also and haven’t had any troubles. Just say the word.

Thanks Todd. They enclosed a fired case. It is about .045" longer to the shoulder than the new FN ammo. At this stage I think it is a headspace problem with the ammo.

Out of curiosity I measured 10 unfired and 10 fired cases on the shoulder. Unfired lengths are from .946" to .951" using a .256" comparitor. Fired cases measured from .996" to .997". These are the factory SS197SR ammo.

That is alot!

I've read that it happens with that pistol because its starts extracting while there is still enough pressure to expand the thin brass. Don't have any first hand experience with it.

Pressure? Ain't got no pressure if it doesn't fire or maybe I'm not comprehending what you are saying. I've done that more than one time.

Sorry, I meant that it could be the reason your fired case that came with the pistol is so much longer to the shoulder than a new one. Not saying that the ammo you've got isn't too short.

The shoulder will stretch forward a great deal in semi autos. It will be worse with higher powder charges. This happens in both the 5.7 pistol and the ps90.

Does the firing pin protrude when you pull the trigger? I use a cleaning rod to check . I have seen broken firing pins in the pistols

Butch,

I bought a 5.7N pistol in 2005, so far no issues shooting FN ammo. If you want to compare pistols, I can have one of my buddies take mine on his way to Carthage next week, the 24th. You can meet with him in Terrell off I-20 for the handoff.

Let me know so I can put you two in contact.

Thanks Nez, Let me check a few things today. I understand that a piece of paper was in the case when he purchased the pistol that cautioned which ammo to use.
Matthais, it is a new pistol and yes the firing pin protrudes enough.

I hope you get this figured out. The firing pin being broken was my best guess. I am interested to know what is causing the issue once you figure it out. Best of luck
