off centered chamber??

Does anyone know what is happening to this new LRPV Savage 223 with 75g VLDs? Seated bullets show 3 lands on one side & just a scratch mark on the other. Does it with old FL sized brass or new brass that’s been collet sized. Does it with ejector in or out. Neck runout is maybe .0005 on a fired case. Bullet runout is maybe .002. By looking at the scuff from where the bullet rubs at the bottom while chambering the lands always show up on the left side and the long scratch shows up on the right.

Unfortunetly, That's not too uncommon for factory barrels. Does it shoot good? If not, just chalk it up to mass production and get a custom tube..

Assuming your bullets are concentirc and co-axially aligned in the case. It is just like a car out of alignment it want ever drive straight.

No barrels are drilled perfectly straight. Factory barrels generally are of lessor quality materials, poorer workmanship, inferior and worn out tooling. If a barrel is not indexed of the bore at the throat then the chamber can be both co-axially and concentrically out of alignment.

When a chamber reamer is turning it is cutting the same cut within the cylinder axis. If it is not perfectly parallel to the bore the bullet engagement will not be the same. You are seeing a good example of what I said in the first two sentences in the second paragraph. This is the reason chambers should be indexed to within less than .0002 and a floating reamer holder used. I hate to hear this about a Savage. I suggest you call and bring this to the attention of Joe Degrande at Savage. Then report back to us what he has to say. I suspect they will tell you one of two things. "it is within factory specs" or "send it back and they will replace the barrel".

Good luck and I hope I have answered your question.

The most important question is - how does it shoot? Next is - how many rounds have been shot through this barrel?

I've noticed things like this happening in the past on new factory rifles. Most of the time it disappears after the barrel is well broken in. If it's shooting decent grpups and you don't have very many shots through the tube I'd say that it's a bit too early to panic.

Thanks for the input people. Rusty, I called and I’m sending it back. We’ll see what happens.

The gun was purchased to be used as a factory class groundhog shoot rifle. So putting on a different barrel isn’t an option at this point. I got dreever with his 223 VLP Savage and another Savage 223 shooter breathing down my neck at the local shoots. Along with a Sako +$3K braked TRG that’s permitted in class. So this thing has to do better than my old cheaper gun. We have a month and a half till the shoots start. Practice shoots are starting now. So I either act now or take the chance of losing the gun during the season.

I’ve shot it once on a good day. After sighting it in it shoot a 4 shot group in the teens, then fired 2 5 shoot groups that were in the low 6s. While that isn’t bad, it isn’t any real improvement yet over my near half the cost 2 year old 12BVSS-S that averages in the 5s. My thinking is that the mis-alignment isn’t going to make it shoot any better than a true chamber would and almost for sure it’ll shoot worse then it could. It’s not like these are the same barrels that they put on all their other rifles. The LRPVs are a different thread and diameter and are only used on their most expensive target models.

Wonder if this thread should have been put in the main forum? NP if the mod feels it should be moved.

Thanks,
Bill
