Oehler 35 tripod?

Anybody have a recommendation on a single tripod to use with the Oehler 35 chronograph? The one I’m using now is kind of jury rigged and has seen better days. Wonder what else is out there that may work.

Thanks, John.

Go to ebay and search on Bogen Tripod. I bought one and and it works great. Bought another off Craigs list for $25
This a really nice one

Theres loads of good tripods out there. Manfrotto, Gitzo - and all pricey. Head for the used market - swap meets, pawn shops and the like. Plenty of older, more substantial models for little money. Most will have the 1/4in screw fitting. I was given an old Rollei designed for large format cameras a few years ago. Large -1 1/4 in tube construction. Very useful bit of kit.

Thanks much for the replies. So I’m not familiar with tripods at all. Will most have a connection on top to put a screw through the conduit?

Thanks, John.

Most tripods which were designed for photographic use have a 1/4" connector screw through the head platform. This is a result of many cameras having the female recess in the camera body. Place the camera on the platform and tighten the screw into the recess to hold the camera steady. This same process applies to any other equipment with a female recess.

My own experience is that the as shipped tripod setup is portable and neat with the long rifle box and doesn't work at my local range when the wind blows. Better tripods that scan and pan smoothly don't help.

Sandbags at a minimum or the array blows over. It does require a pickup but I like a couple sawhorses and a 4x4. Getting the screens level is a pain in any and all cases of my experience. Something with iron or PVC pipe might be lighter and handier. I do find a fair quantity of more or less intact music stands from thrift shops handy for improvised wind flags but tape doesn't catch the wind like all the plastic in an Oehler set-up.

I bought a Vanguard at Cabelas a few years ago. Use it for my spotter, and crony. Very solid tripod. They have a website, google or better yet screw google and duckduckgo them.

I use the flimsy ones that came with it. While I have better tripods for my cameras as long as there is no wind to speak of the original ones work fine and as mentioned go nicely into the case.

I was not happy with the stability of the tripods that I tried. Especially in the wind. So I built a stand. Visualize a large disc blade as a base with a piece of square tubing welded to the center of it with another smaller square tube that will slide into it and held in place with a set screw. This makes the height adjustable. A short piece of flat bar welded on top and a couple of conduit clamps to hold the conduit that the screens attach to. Its stable and not too heavy. The negative is that it doesn't break down for storage.

I have tripods, but for my Oehler I use the stock stands. I hang a gallon jug of water from the pipe just above ground level to aid in stability
