NRA Service Rifle equipment questions

Two questions regarding equipment permissible for use in NRA rules/sanctioned service rifle competition:

1) CMP Service Rifle rules specify a barrel .750" outer diameter forward of the gas block/front sight post for service rifles. Does this rule apply for NRA High Power service rifle competition? In my case, looking to use Armalite M15T barrel with a .800" outer diamter forward of the gas block, with all other equipment rules adhered per 3.1.c (A2 grip, stock, full railed handgaurd etc.). This barrel is identical to the barrel used in the AR10 National Match used by USAMU (2012?) but chambered in 5.56, so it would seem to fall within the scope of Rule 3.1. as an issued arm as well as previously sanctioned for NRA competition.

2) While 3.1.c. now makes it possible for the use of a max 4.5x optic for service rifle compeition, does this apply to 3.1.d.? Which is to ask: can one use a 20" barrel USAMU National Match Pattern AR10/M110/SR25 series rifle with a Serivce Rifle style optic in NRA santioned service rifle matches?

Yes your rifle will be fine for NRA competitions, and being completely honest, I cannot imagine it being an issue in CMP competition either. I've never seen someone going around measuring barrel diameter.

In regards to the optics, this is what the rulebook says in the second paragraph under 3.1:

The rifle may have an optical sight (reflective sights are considered optical sights) with a maximum power of 4.5X. Variable scopes with a maximum of 4.5X are permitted. Only commercially manufactured scopes that were produced with a maximum magnification of 4.5X and that have a maximum objective lens of 34mm may be used. If an optical sight is used, the same optical sight must be used in all stages of a course of fire (changing sights is not permitted). The centerline of an optical sight shall be no higher than 3.5 inches above the centerline of the bore.

So, I would go ahead and use it, but be careful in long range matches and make sure the match program/match director say the scope is ok in the "iron" matches. I've seen a few issues with this last year.

I would think being 800 in a visible location where it should be 750 would be illegal
also I would argue that the specific cmp 750 is trying to do the same thing as nra rules only more clearly

I don't care and don't even shoot service, just my thoughts
 
If you don't win nobody will care... if you do, well, then that is another matter all together. I doubt that you will be winning XTC matches before you wear out the barrel and can get one that is "legal".

Be aware that SR shooters are some of the most rule obsessed shooters out there.
 
Received email reply yesterday afternoon from NRA Competitions. 4.5x mag optics are permissible for M110/SR25/& AR10 National Match variants, unless specifically identified as being an iron sight only match.
 
Wait! Don't sell it! Put a .308 (or .223) barrel on it and shoot Palma! And every other Long and Mid-Range event. Irons can and do still win matches.

Heh. Already did that. I built a Palma rifle, stainless 40X action, 30" Krieger 1:14 with .307 bore, McGee 4-way adjustable Palma stock. The X-course bolt gun is the take-off 40X barrel (.308) on a 722 action, slotted for M14 strippers, with a matching McGee 4-way X-course stock. One PNW rear with Anschutz iris and Redfield front to switch back and forth. Both have 95 Palma chambers, cut with the same reamer so they can share practice brass. And a Starlite double rifle case to lug them around in.

Now I don't have a 1000 yard range to shoot Palma at (Deep Creek is close enough for matches, but not for practice), and as little as I shoot high power anymore I'd just as soon shoot the M1. I won't win anyway, so I may as well have fun.

I'll probably hang on to them for a bit and finish up the Palma stock over the winter (I've been shooting the Remington factory stock with a cracked wrist) and try to sell them both at a gun show next spring. I hate to have them gathering dust when someone else could be shooting them. Or else they'll start allowing 190s and scopes in Palma and they'll be completely useless. If I wanted to shoot optics, I may as well come all the way out of the closet and shoot .223. :p As a side benefit, if I sold these I could afford a Barrett Fieldcraft in 6.5 CM.
 
your rifle won't be legal in service rifle for either NRA or CMP due to the barrel diameter but it is legal for NRA and CMP match rifle XTC. if you're just trying to get your feet wet in XTC then shoot what you have in the match rifle category until you burn out the barrel, then switch to a service rifle legal barrel if that's what you want to shoot. the course of fire is the same so nothing will change.
 
Began shooting XTC service rifle in 2011 with both irons and optics. Been primarily shooting F Class for past 2 years so I've not been focused on the changes occurring in service rifle. I have multiple rules spec upper/rifle options already, just exploring different things with other equipment I have, hence my questions. The club I shoot with is NRA rules, so with that, going with the AR10 NM for a bit.

An answer to my first from NRA Competitions this morning: "That rule does not apply to NRA competitions. We have no diameter rule."

Then everybody in NRA service can use a full bull barrel?
But nobody chooses to?

Or .800 is close enough visually but .900+ is not?

From the answer I received, the answer is "yes" and NRA isn't concerned about it. I would presume it is because NRA would like to be more inclusive given all the changes in AR/M16 pattern service rifles over the past several years. One only need look at what the Rules consider as a "Service Rifle" and what the Services are actually using to see a delta between the two.

I can't answer why NRA Service Rifle shooters haven't been using bull barrels with other than .750" O.D. Maybe it is because up until the rules changes permitting optics- and therefore gas blocks versus a front sight post- having an other than .750 barrel was not considered a viable option. Maybe it isn't something Service Rifle shooter's see as a feasible because most want the option to compete under CMP rules for EIC and Camp Perry.
 
You are talking about .050" difference. Unless someone is running around with calipers and chooses to challenge you (with the wording of the rules), you probably are alright. But you always run the risk of a challenge, especially if you win.
 
CMP is much less inclusive about dimensions. I believe CMP rules apply for leg points. It would be a sad day to win a leg match and have your rifle disqualified.

No legal bearing but I think it represents the way the rules have been interpreted for decades.

Then it comes down to whether or not 800 is close enough to standard.
CMP fixed a problem with the clear 750 rule.
