Mentors are good...
There are several books out there too, but couldn't tell you the best as I haven't read any of them...I learned on the fly...

There is another forum that you can visit that is devoted to both short and long range Benchrest. It's not considered proper to use one forum to directly promote another so let's just call it http://www.benchrest.com/forums/.If you go to that forum's home page you will find links to rule books that will help to understand some of the terminology and how matches are formatted.
There are any number of books available that are required reading reading for beginners. An outfit like Sinclair International ,www.sinclairintl.com) sells them plus just about every imaginable gizmo conceived in the fertile minds of shooters. A copy of their catalog alone is a great reference source.
But all the reading in the world will pale in comparison to attending an actual match. You will learn more in one day than you ever imagined. Being as how it's winter,in some places) you may have to wait until spring but make that one of your priorities.
Good Luck. Be careful. It's contagious.
