6mmbr rifle build advice

I have recently been introduced to bench rest shooting and would like to purchase or have a 6mm br built. I am a total novice to this and would like any advice on where to start. I am thinking of purchasing the Savage Model 12 6mm br rifle since it is already built and I can get some experience in long range shooting off the shelf and also start learning how to reload. Any advice would be appreciated.

Certainly not a bad place to start. I have 2 savages 6brs one a 12 twist one an 8 twist.
I don't know what twist these factory savage guns are.
You could always find a savage action and build exactly what you want. With a twist rate suited to your shooting needs

Sounds like you have the "6mmbr jazz" feeling which is common amongst new folks to this caliber and Benchrest shooting. Like the others have suggested, because you are new (or even if you were an experienced shooter) a Savage 6mmbr Benchrest Model 12 will serve you well. Mine shot incredible groups from day one and still shoots probably better than I do even after a few years. It also depends on how "serious" you want to get with that rifle and building one can be an expensive venture. Not sure I'd want to SERIOUSLY compete with my rifle because the others on the line probably would have $4000+ into their rifles and that's without glass atop her. And don't forget the other goodies you'd need like a rest, bags and the endless stream of unforeseen little knick knacks that inexperienced shooter don't even know about. I started out spending $1200 for my Savage Model 12 Benchrest and by the time I got "everything" I thought I needed (including a scope, professional rest, etc, etc, etc) PLUS the reloading equipment, I easily dumped $3,500. This hobby ain't cheap and I'm sure there are lots of folks on this blog that can help spend your money for things they'd suggest you buy. In any case, good luck and have fun with that baby. It doesn't happen overnight so think out what you want and what you need.

This is my second year in the long range br game. I started with a Savage that I decked out. I did a little bit of winning with it. About 3/4 of the way through the year I built a rifle based off a bat so keep that in mind.

Now if I was gonna buy a Savage I would buy the parts and put it together, it'll cost about the same but you'll end up with a way better rifle. Jim at Northland shooters will get you what you need.

You wouldn't regret it. Straight forward to build. Jim has everything you will need

Thanks for the responses. I am still undecided and still doing more research and reading on this site. It seems that many people like to have a custom rifle built for them.

I went through the same dilemma about 2 years ago. I read and read and read. I decided on a Savage 6br benchrest (1 in 8 twist) with the accutrigger. I then sent it to Eric Bostrom in Fruitville Florida for bedding and a tuner break. I also bought 200 rounds of new Lapua loaded ammo. I could not be happier with the rifle. I already had a used NF scope from a gun show. I bought a 20 MOA base and rings. The gun just shoots great. I also reload for the rifle.

A new Savage 6br costs 1250. + Bedding and tuner break 245.00
Eric will build a rifle for about 2400.00 to your specifications and it will shoot. (He built me a 308 bench gun on a Savage BR action)

I debated about the 6mm Dasher and decided to go with a caliber that had factory ammo available. Dasher ammo has to be made from scratch. My neighbor and I are doing just that for his rifle.

Good luck on your decision.

With some patience you can usually pick up a used custom rifle for a very good price, especially in a popular chambering like 6BR. It's hard to beat a quality custom for competitive shooting.

And even if you go the Savage route, used rifles are often the best deal. Here's one:

Thanks for all your help and thank for this website. It posses great information. I am going to build a custom rifle or have one built.

I was running my Savage in 1k br and was kinda happy. Then one of my buddies sent me a link to a BAT 3l that was new and in the classifieds so I bought it had a Krieger chambered for a Dasher. I think watching the classifieds here is the way to do it for a beginner. Also if your not that into it you can probably get more return on your money with a custom action. But I probably have 2500 in my BAT but I also got a used McM Tooley for $225.
