All-

This has been a long time coming, but we are finally at the point where we are going to move to a new Forum software. Our current software has served us well, but it lacks in the mobile department and is generally outdated. Keeping up with updates and fixes is challenging, at best.

The new forum software that we are using is called XenForo. There is a site whose owner we have been working with and our site will end up looking a lot like his in terms of style, theme, and add-ons. You can check out his forum at:

http://www.southbayriders.com/forums/

Our new forum will have the same basic theme and will display more or less in the same way, so that is what the new forum will look and behave like if you would like to "preview" it. You should check it out on a mobile device - it's quite a nice change from our current software, IMO.

To support this change, we need to TAKE DOWN THE FORUM on Sunday, 12/27. Probably around 10pm or so, Pacific time. The forum will be unavailable for approximately 12 hours while we import the data into the new forum. You should be able to start checking between 10am and noon on 12/28 Pacific. If you see the old forum pop back up, something did not go well... :-)

There will be a few changes that users will have to deal with:

The new forum does not have the concept of "display names". This is both good and bad. The bad side is that you account will display your *original* name on your posts on login; for example, my original account name is "jaychris", so when I log in to the new forum, all of my posts initially show up as "jaychris". However your login name can be changed to match your current display name. I recommend that you login using the email address that you registered with (this is the easiest if you don't remember your original login name).

Things WILL look a little different - but, we will still have the Classifieds feed and all of the forums will have the same names, layout, and content.

We are still working on a few layout issues - but, nothing major. In fact, most people will probably not even notice, since they are minor adjustments to padding, whitespace, etc... but, if you notice something, it's most likely an intended effect.

If you are a Site Sponsor and have questions or concerns, please contact myself or the Forum Boss. We worked really hard to make sure that nothing changed in those regards, except for cases where they are better. :-)

Keep an eye out for neat new features - for example, a "related threads" box will show up now that shows threads related to the one you are looking in. It also displays when you start a new post, so that you can see if there is already a thread that exists on the subject you are about to start a new thread on. This should cut down on the same thread subjects being posted over and over, because someone couldn't find an existing thread.
And, lastly - a bit tongue in cheek, but this isn't really an open call for feedback... :-) This IS happening. Some people will love it. Some people will hate it. Most will fall in between. This needed to happen for a variety of reasons, both technical and aesthetic.

This is mostly here for notice - if you want to ask questions, feel free, but we're not really interested in diatribes on how there's no need to change things.

Since I haven't "logged" out in months, or maybe years, I decided to log out today as I was concerned.

The login information I retained obviously works.
I know I have changed emails over the years, but I honestly don't remember the original email I originally used to set up my login information.

Jay, you think I will be OK?

I guess I will see after Christmas.

I did check the other site out and I think we will be OK. I monitor several sites including other hobbies (sites) I have, and the new one is similar. After a few times using it, it should become second nature. They all work about the same.

JMO,

Merry Christmas Everyone,

Dennis

How about pics?? Will size still need to be -- kinda small? jd

jds, I navigated around the site Jay posted above: http://www.southbayriders.com/forums/

I moved around pretty easy, I don't think it will be a big issue, just learning where some things are located on the new site. It's there, and I found the things I was looking for pretty easy.

Again, JMO, but I think we will be OK.

Dennis

Any suggestions on saved pages that have been bookmarked by the users for quick access? Some of these could potentially be quite old and probably not easy to find in a package. Are these lost to us?

Jay,

Thanks for the heads up. I will have to find something else to look at for the 12 hours you are down. I have been looking for this change ever since you told me about it at Missoula. Things will go fine and after a week or so no one will even notice the difference.

Thank you for what you do for the site.

See you in Phoenix.

The new software handles pictures much more nicely - I think people will like that feature a lot. We should be able to allow larger pictures as they will auto-size for mobile devices now. Part of the reason we have set limits on this current software is that since there is no mobile responsiveness, large pictures will cause issues with viewing/loading. That should not be a problem after the change.

Jay,

Will the site look the same, or will it look like the south bay riders site?

Phil.

Good luck with the transition - we'll be waiting with baited breath. :)

Just as a matter of info to management, we have a mid-range Android smartphone, neither feature poor nor feature rich, and mobile viewing and responding on this site has never been a problem.

This may work; go to your bookmarked pages and copy the address and paste them into a document created in Word, Notepad, etc. Once the new site is up and running, if your old bookmarks are lost you can copy and paste the addresses you saved.

I want to thank Jay for all his hard work.

And I want to explain to our members that this is a complex change-over. We are doing our very best (working nights and weekends), but there will be some bumps in the road.

Understand that Forum software has to have some pretty remarkable capabilities. The system needs to let 1000+ simultaneous users access 600,000+ posts instantly. And those posts will be in threads that may be constantly changing. What's more, we also have to hold profile data and preferences for 30,000 registered users!

And then the challenge is to have it look good on Desktop, laptop, tablet, and cell phones -- for multiple operating systems. No small challenge.

So bear with us guys... and try to understand if there are some small things that need fine-tuning after the upgrade.

Why Change the Software?
The current software runs well, but there is no "service center" for the current software, and it is getting very outdated. We are facing a situation where the software is not keeping up with general web standards for display, security, and searchability. We are switching to a program that has some of the world's smartest developers working with it. We are doing our best to carry over the best features of the current system. But keep in mind that each forum software suite is a little different -- we may lose a couple features but we will gain some features in return.

Will smart phone users be able to opt out of the mobile version?

Not by default, but it's something we could consider at some point down the road. Unlike mobile commerce sites (where I usually change to the full display version), the mobile version of the software is not partial functionality or a stripped down copy of the site. It's the full site, just changing to layout to accommodate the screen size. It makes the forums easier to traverse by finger and puts a lot of display stuff at the bottom.

If you can't use the full site and the mobile is like the linked one you will loose me for sure. I'm all for newer software but less choice and a stripped down mobile optimized page will turn me and I'm sure others off.

Nothing worse than a stripped down mobile version.

Will we be losing our saved private messages?

Dave, we've studied feedback with users in Xenforo forums and we haven't seen/heard negative reactions. The cellphone appearance is simplified yes, but it is also much easier to see the titles of forums and read posts. The tablet view, in landscape mode, will be very close to the standard desktops format. The desktop format will have all the navigation we use currently, with some simplification and bigger type (good for older eyes). There will be some very nice elements on Desktop view -- such as a preview of the first paragraph of a post or thread.

Will we be losing our saved private messages?

All your private messages will be available through your profile center. Or by simply clicking on your log-in name at top right. There will be fewer icons, but you will be able to access everything.

That's my concern. Loss of my PM records, addresses, contacts. Will they be saved?
Oops, never mind. Thanks. I don't like change but if ya gotta, I'm with ya.

So are the adds and graphics going to be on your mobile version ? I actually like the adds and use them to link in when I buy from sponsors. I don't even own a PC and do everything on a mobile tablet and phone. Many people are doing as I did and doing away with a land line and going completely mobile. I'm not a young man at 47 and neither are my friends. Just about all of them use the same combination to access the web.
