Not off to a good start

Hey Doc, I have tried Nosler Custom brass as well as Hornady>>>they are one in the same. It is the softest brass out there. The "web-section" of the brass, on stout loads, will expand at a considerable rate. As it expands and contracts it gets hard. If it expands TOO much, because of a slightly large chamber, it will get difficult to resize. I had a .300 Win Mag several years ago, a Ruger#1 that had a rather large, although w/in S.A.A.M.I specs, chamber. I went to develop some loads for it with Hornady brass>>>WHOA! I REALLY had to push to get that brass back up inside the die to be resized. I measured an unfired round and a fired round>>12K difference! This was on loads that were not "hot" just a tad "warm".. Although I have never had one where I could not get the case up in the die>>>it is a real possibility, although this is the first time I have heard of NOT being able to actually get the brass up into the die.

The spray lubes that have alcohol in them must sit for a bit after you spray the cases. If the alcohol has not evaporated completely it will lock your press down just as described.

I second a thorough cleaning of the sizing die - then using a GOOD lube. RCBS lube works, in my opinion - MUCH better than the Hornady lube. If you have a strong preference for spray lube, give the Dillon pump spray a try. I was once sizing a bunch of Machine-gun fired .308 brass and encountered the same problem until I used some lube up to the task.

It's your lube or your cases have been shot in an oversize chamber .RCBS lube is not good , sizing die wax is better , and forget the spray stuff . I use my own but will agree on sizing die wax over anything out there .

Pulled out a winchester case and used hornaday one shot lube. Resized fine, about the same effort as my 308. No sticking.
Must be the hornaday brass??

Rifle is a new 700P. The brass I have was picked up at the range over several weeks. So I have no idea what rifle it was from. I had checked oal though and it all seemed ok.

Anyone see any 300 win mag brass for sale?
Hi Mike, could be the brass you picked up was fired in an automatic. That could be the cause of your brass issue. May try some that was fired in your rifle only. I'm only throwing something out there for you to think about. Keep us posted as to what your findings are. .....SEMPER FI!

When you lube your brass are you sure your getting lube at the base, just spraying the neck and shoulders don't cut it, not much happens at the shoulder to stick a case, but the lower half of the case is really important part for lube.

I know the shoulder gets sized also so

I full length resize .264 WM cases which are essentially the same case as the .300 WM. They can be tough to size, and you need the very best lubricant to do it. Using something like a 30 weight motor oil will jam the case in the die every time. You need an oil with very high extreme pressure qualities. One of the very best lubricants I have found is STP oil additive. Use it straight on a rag or pad. Only a very thin coat is required or you will dent the shoulder.

So, if you are determined to use "range brass" (which I would not recommend) try some STP for lube. Even after you size them, they still may not fit your chamber. So try them before you size a bunch of them, and find they still do not fit your gun.
