Nostalgic rifles

I'm going to deer hunt this year with the rifle I killed my first deer with in 1959. It's a Savage 219, 30-30. I cleaned it with CLR (gasp) and mounted an old Bushnell Scopechief 2.5x8. Using 130 gr Speer Hp's it's been under 3/4 moa at 100 yards. I will use it where close shots are the only shots, but would not hesitate at a 200 yard chance. I will also be using my old 30-06 built for me in 1969 using a 98 Mauser , my first bolt action. What old rifles are you going to use, tell us about them. Thanks, Barlow

My primary deer rifle is a 1952 era Remington 721 in 300H&H. I know it's overkill but, I read about the 300 H&H in my dad's Speer reloading manual when I was a kid and had to have one. I got one when I got out of college and still love it 32 years later.

My father still has his father's .338 Win Mag Mod 70 purchased in mid 1950's for a moose hunt in the Yukon. My father sighted it in with two shots and called it good due to a massive headache and a sore shoulder (he was a teenager at the time):D. My grandfather shot a moose on that trip. My father still has the original box of cartridges with three fired cases...two did in his head and shoulders, one did in a moose! It is the only possession of my father's that I am adamant about inheriting;). (That box of ammo included)

Winchester model 42 I was given at age 12 from a childless uncle and aunt...multiple limits on grouse, woodcock, rabbit and pheasant since.

Stevens 414 22 LR. Dad traded my first rifle (67 Win) for it to my cousin. Not sure how I feel about that

Win 88 308. Dad's. Had two, (same uncle's) sold better one and don't feel bad. Hardly ever use it, but it means something to me cause dad owned it.

Arisaka 220 Swift. Buddy bought it as first groundhog gun. Couldn't get it to shoot. I bought it and did. Remember the early years of groundhogs and life in a new state when I hunt with it.

722/40X clone. Gave it to my daughter who loves it, took it PD hunting. Good memories, good connection to her.

Nostalgic rifles. Heck that is all I hunt with. My deer hunting rifle is a 7-06 AI built on a 1953 FN Mauser action by my great uncle. Has a custom stock, Canjar trigger, and Buehler scope mounts. Never wanting anything more. Always knew I had the best rifle in camp. Built the year I was born 1955. All but my Wheeler target rifle would have to be considered vintage, consider myself a bit of a snob when it comes to my rifles, pistols and shot guns. Spent a life time acquiring my nostalgic collection. Consider myself very blessed to be their short term care taker. My guns now number 43 and have no plans to add to them. Got all I can do to shoot and maintain what I have. I like to think I shoot quit a bit, but spend more time hand loading.

Im headed out thursday with my custom built XP100 pistol in 284 win, with a TBAC suppressor on it. Havent killed anything with it yet. Ill be looked to put some meat in the freezer, spike or doe. Aint hunting horns this year, still got one at the taxidermist im waiting on lol.

7x57 Ackley Imp. on a Ludwic-Lowe Model 95 Mauser Action (Sporterized) with a G.R. Douglas Air-Gauged (XX) 1-10" twist 26" heavy sporter barrel. Rhinehart Fajen $3.00 Walnut stock blank and a Weaver T-6 fixed power scope in Buehler Rings & base. - Circa 1961 - Belongs to my father and was built by him back when things in life were not as complicated. - Still shoots 120 & 140 gr. bullets well and has taken a lot of deer in the Rocky Mountain States.

The first deer rifle my dad gave me was a Savage 219 30-30. I was about 10 when he gave it to me. First time he handed it over I opened it up but it wasn't easy enough for me to close it by hand. Before he could stop me, I propped it on my belly to close it and pinched a big chunk of skin in the action. Left a good sized blood blister as I recall.

Still put a couple rounds through it every year during sight-in season and make a hunt with it every once in a while but hasn't taken a deer in a number of years.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm, all of the whitetails I shot in ten years (14 total in Ill and Mo) of hunting deer before I moved to Idaho in 1978 from the midwest were with cast bullets in the Krag I inherited from my Maternal Grandfather. Under 200 yards there is not much better than the old Lyman/Pope 311334GC cast out of 20:1 at about1900 fps MV. You could eat right up to the bullethole.

Rem 40XBBR in 22-250. My first dedicated PD rifle. still has the original 6.5x20x40 Leopold on it, and I still use the same 50Gn load that was developed for it. (longer OAL these days). no clue how many rounds are on the barrel, or how many PD's met St Peter. it really needs a new Bbl now, its more of a parrot rifle than a rifle, but still shoots 1/2". I can't seem to make the rebarrel a priority. too many good memories.

My Dads 7mmMag by Flaigs. FN Mag mauser/Douglas Bbl. originally built for elk hunting, its now my coyote dressing machine. :-) lots of memories elk hunting with my dad.

The other day my uncle came to visit and he pulled a gun case out of his car. Once inside he opened it up and showed me his Remington 788 chambered in 6mm Remington. He told me that ever since my dad ( his brother ) passed away he hasn’t hunted and has spent more time golfing. He said the 6mm could use a bit of a walk to stretch its legs- im thinking it will be my go to Whitetail Rifle- worked up a load super easy and sub MOA with Reloader - 19. And a berger 95 classic hunter. The rifle has taken a lot of whitetail, antelope and a lot of coyotes over the years. There’s a feeling I get that’s hard to describe when using a rifle that’s been in the family for a long time and taken some beautiful game.

I don't have any old rifles, just old cartridges. I will be using my Rem 700 MTN rifle in 7x57 Mauser, or my Marlin Guide gun in 45/70.

Mike

P.S. I need an old gun!

I'll be heading out with my dad who shoots his dad's early 60's vintage Sako Forester in 243Win. Has the original Kahles 2.2-7 scope mounted by sako in sako rings. Grandpa bought the rifle while stationed in Germany. That rifle has taken way more deer than I can count right now, many of which were snap head shots. It's a stone cold shooter for sure, even almost 60yrs later.

Bought a new Marlin 336 in 1966 chambered in 44 mag. Used it for years on drives in Pa. Been sitting too long. Checked it about a month ago and next week it goes to Georgia with me. That and an old Winchester 7mm mag are the rifles of choice for me this year.
