No More Russian Primers?

As it stands I'll most likely "run out of years" before I run out of primers, or powder and bullets for that matter.
The fix to that problem is to shoot more and shoot more often.

A guy in the AR15 forums has lots of primer study information (high speed photos, velocity variance info, etc). He says that they're the same primer compound by a different anvil.

Next time you're over there, please find that thread then copy the URL for it & post it here.

German Salazar did something like that years ago but as he's closed the door to his Rifleman's Journal essays it's lost to us :-[

If someone's picked up where he left off I'd like to read it.

Last spring I was going to do something along those lines myself but when outdoor shooting season began I lost interest. Now with news the Russians aren't coming anymore it may be no longer of interest.

I did some load-test-over-chrono a couple months back with 6 small rifle primers, three of 'em the Russian flavors. Turned out the KVB-223 had greatest influence on SD & velocity but those have thin cups that tend to crater / pierce in some rifles. The others - KVB-223REM & KVB-556M, both referred to as 'magnum' - have tougher cups yet didn't appear to add significant velocity, much to my surprise.

Of the six tested Remington's 7-1/2 gave lowest SD & highest velocity but they can be hard to find sometimes.

You are talking about SR primers, am I correct? What about LR/LR-M primers?

Anything produced in Russia is what I'm hearing. Wolf, Tula(mmo), the old PMC brand... not going to be imported until the political situation with Russia changes. Small or large doesn't matter, they're history.

My informal testing last fall was just the small (Russian) primers along side 3 others that ought to remain available here unless something really dreadful happens :o

Ive already read the Remington 7 1/2 is a good primer.

FYI, the author I'm thinking of on ar15.com is "popnfresh":

Sorry I don't have time to find the exact post atm.

I found this, it is interesting, very sad that the good stuff isn't made in the US anymore and now we can't even get Russian stuff.

I don't see that as a "problem" so no "fix" is needed.

If I run short I'll just start going to estate sales where those a little older than me have left behind large hoards of Primers, Powder, and Bullets.

as Naturalized US Citizen (from Ukraine):
a) Russia ban, in effect, is just a US gesture to show 'something'. In 1994, Ukraine gave up Nuclear Weaponry in Exchange for a promise from USA, UK and Russia not to be, basically, 'F..ked with' - (UN Document A/49/765) on December 5, 1994.
b) Last year Russia annexes the Crimea (in violation of above UN document) - becomes evident that USA and UK promises (France and China also were part, indirectly) means precisely JACK.
c) Syria, Iran, North Korea are laughing their asses off, because what 'guarantees' can USA provide when part of Ukraine just got simply confiscated, active war in Donbass region (against 'Russian' volunteers from a regular army). Thus the reason you hear no progress on Nuclear Talks which are of any value.
d) if Hillary becomes our president - we might as well all be qualified as domestic теrrorisтs - because, apparently, there is a new definition as to what 'stockpiles of аммuniтion and еxplоsivеs' - few thousand rounds is already a bad news, evidently, if authorities show up.
on a domestic politics front - Donald Trump must be hired by democrats, because this is how I see it - if he does NOT get a Rep nomination, he will switch to Independent, so we will have a republican split. If he does get a Republican nomination to simply have a chance in hell for a Republican President - he is too 'Trumpy' to actually get the presidency... When you look at it - do you think Cruiz or Rubio hava a chance in hell to win?

e) no matter what president we get, we will always fly another 'Reset' button to Russia and, likely, our relations with Russia will get restored, however, with Hillary at the helm - no need to own primers or Russian ammo for anyone with a gun control measure.

The point to all this is... whenever there's a problem for shooters, the place to look for the origin is always the Oval Office.

The point about Yamamoto's advice about invading the USA being a bad idea was wrong only in that he never actually said it. Thanks to our esteemed rulers, between Hell and high water, it's gonna be for anther reason soon enough.

Campaign promises to whack jobs outweigh the bill of rights.

Proud of ourselves, are we? I think we should all burn in Hell for letting things get this far...

Just ordered some from ammunition store. Sale on SRM primers, $99 per 5000. Looks like a couple other places have some left, like Selways/etc. Get them while you can.

Just went to a local gun shop (Greenacres) , they had CCI & FEDERAL primers
$79 per 5000. What the H--l!.

I switched from Fed to CCI about a decade ago, and I can still find the CCI BR's regularly enough. The way I shoot, buying the very best at a premium price just doesn't make sense. In my case, such a practice would simply be conspicuous consumption.

A year or so back, when primer shortages were especially annoying, I took to doing my load development with standard primers like CCI 200's and CCI 400's. Once the development was done, I would substitute the corresponding BR primers to verify any advantage. On average, there wasn't any substantial difference (and certainly not enough to pay inflated prices), and I attribute this to successful load development. I suspect this could hold true for others, too.

There are a lot of things I do differently for the greater bulk of my shooting that are different from what I would be doing for 1000yd F Open. I think reasonable economy is a valuable asset to reloading.
