no more Postal Money Orders for me,,,

sent a PMO via UPS in a package with tracking and the package is lost,,went to Post Office this AM and was told you cant stop payment on a PMO,,,they had me fill out some forms and if it is not cashed in 60 days they will refund my money,,if it gets stolen and cashed by someone else they said they would send me the cancelled check and info with the location where it was cashed and I would have to take legal action against whoever cashed it and get my money back from them,,

I got a bad feeling this is gonna be more hassle than its worth,,
I always thought a PMO was the safest way to buy/sell online but I think I just done my last Postal Money order,,,

NO, they are not the best way to send payment. Yet some people want you to pay with pmo. I won't buy from those folks. I can send a check and have no problem in waiting if they want to do that. Just put For Depost Only on the back. And a thief can't cash it. Thieves know that by the time the PO gets thru screwing around they re long gone with your money.

And for the guys on this list who say Postal Money Order only. I won't be buying from you.

I always pay with a uspmo. I have used pay pal twice, but prefer not too. I will send a personal check if need be.

I think people use the phrase "Postal Money Order" as a catch all. I use regular money orders from the market and they always cash them. I do prefer Pay Pal. You don't expose your account numbers and if you don't get the product they can get your money back.

NO NO NO it is NOT the "safest" way. paypal or another certified online payment system is.

My .02: If a buyer wants to pay with a m.o., I'll take it but if I've dealt with them before or they've got food feedback, a personal check works too. I've probably sold more items with a check payment than m.o.s. On high priced items, a bank treasurer's check sent priority mail is a good way to go. I sell on three other sites and out of all of them, only been stiffed once for non payment.

When selling, I never accept personal checks. If the check bounces I get stuck with a $35 fee.
I never heard of a bank charging the payee for a bounced check. If yours does, you need to change banks because it means you can NEVER accept a check for anything without taking the risk that it's a rubber one.

Edit, I just checked my bank, PNC, and they DO charge $12 for an unpaid check. Again, you need to change banks, yours is almost triple that fee.

My bank charges me if I write a bad check, but not if I get one in and try to deposit it. I like using personal checks and do not mind waiting so that the seller knows it clears. Interesting thing though, for those that bank on line, check some times. You deposit a check before around 11:00 AM and you will see it clears in the afternoon, even if your bank has some other policy. Deposit in the afternoon and clears the following business day.

I paid for my first airplane by flying mail and checks to and from clearing houses in the days that it took 5 days for a check to clear, but have had sellers hold mine for a much as 10 days even though they had already cleared the first day deposited.

I like checks too because as someone pointed out, regardless of what kind of check you send, if there are games played the player is subject to Federal Mail Fraud.

Most banks no longer issue Certified Checks without a huge fee. The norm is now Band Drafts, which many people think is the same thing, but is not.

Bob, I have an account with PNC and they charge zero for a Treasurer's check. Banks are like any other business. One has to shop around for the best deal for your particular situation.

I like to use the 'Bill-Pay' feature associated with my checking account. I can have a check issued and mailed by the bank in the seller's mailbox within three or four days. The seller gets a check issued by the bank, not one written by me. Sellers seem to like it.

You're right hog, cashiers checks are free at PNC if you have anything above the most basic account. One way of making up for paying almost no interest on an interest bearing checking account, 0.03% I believe. That's 3 cents a year on $100. The other banks are as bad if not worse.

One of the tellers at PNC told me last fall that they treat USPS money orders the same as personal checks. If you don't have the funds in your account to cover the MO they will not give you cash for them. I had around $10,000 in money orders accumulated and I wanted cash (keeps the gun money and general funds separate). She had to deposit the MO's in my account then do a withdrawal for that amount. She claimed there are a lot of counterfeit MO's around. The local post office will cash up to $500 but they never have that much in the cash drawer.

PayPal with the fee is a much safer deal. 3% but I charge it to my credit card that pays 2% back. Venmo is even better (part of PayPal now). Direct bank to bank instantaneous transfer, 24X7, with no fee at all on either end. #1 granddaughter goes out for pizza and beer, doesn't have enough to cover her part of the tab, text message to Grandpa and in less than a minute her debit card is good to go. Happens a lot.

Will Paypal let you pay for guns (not just accessories) without using the "gift" option? Last I heard they wouldn't. It seems to me that if you buy a gun using Paypal's gift option that you are (1) possibly committing fraud, and (2) giving up the protection Paypal offers to buyers. And yes, the protection is real, IME, anyway. I used it last year for a digital caliper I bought from China. When it failed to ship, Paypal covered my loss.

I tried to use paypal a month ago and gave them my card number and they said someone else had already used that card number as theirs. I only had that card 3 months and had hardly used it at all. Luckily the paypal customer hadn't used it yet and I canceled it right away. These scammers are working hard for our money.

Please, someone tell me WHY PayPal is better ? When you send money to a personal email thru PayPal, they receive it, and you HOPE they send you your purchase. If they don't, PayPal WILL NOT refund any funds sent to an individual that's not a business. It's basically your word against there's. Period. The only thing good about paypal is, you don't wait for the seller to get the MO before shipping. If there honest sellers, PayPal in my opinion is great for speed in receiving.

I can say that they covered me the one time I had an issue..refunded all of my money back.

Things have changed. They sent me an email last week that my money was NOT refundable due to it being sent to a private party. Explanation: They don't know that we didn't send it to family as a gift and am asking for a refund. Must be a business account. Let me just say friends and family payment option is not covered by PayPal buyer protection Gaurantee.

Sent an International Postal Money Order to an outfitter in Alberta Canada. The Outfitter took it to his bank(RBC). They held his money for 16 weeks before crediting it to his account. Probably would not have credited his account then if I had not raised hell. Nat Lambeth
