No Go gauges for Primer Pocket diameter?

These are excellent tools. Unfortunately, large primer pocket is out of stock but small is available.

Fwiw I’ve been successful at measuring the ID of the primer pockets using a dial calipers. The difference between a new pocket and a loose one is a few thou so if you’re careful it’s easy to sort out the loose ones before putting a primer in them.

I have the Ballistictools gauges and I also bought pin gauges that were .0005 smaller than the primer diameter. Primer brands and batches can vary in size/diameter. I was trying to save some Federal .223 brass that had oversize primer pockets after the first firing.

Having said that brass is an expendable item and your bolt face is not.

I have these and would most certainly NOT be without them. Their case neck tension gauges are useful too.

Hope they work for you, they didn't for me. But I transitioned through them to my final solution. But my issue was exacerbated by Remington small rifle (7 1/2) primers failing at the corner. So if the primer wasn't decently tight, I had random primer failures and the bolt face divots they cause.

In my case, once I sorted cases to a tighter fit, the primer failures ended.

What did the bolt face of that gun look like afterwards?

You get more with a semi-auto AR15 and a 30 round mag.

The photo above was from ar15.com and the poster said he didn't worry about loose primer pockets. And he would just replace the bolt if it got bad enough.

It is easy to tell when you have loose primer pockets when you seat a primer. The ones that seat easily I mark and discard after shooting. If you can push the primer in with your thumb they should.be disposed of then.

That is my motivation. Want to know if the pocket is too loose before I seat a primer. Thanks for the help
You kind of have to be your own judge with it. The no go end probably will tell you the most, if it acts like it’s wanting to start in the pocket a little bit I usually cull.

I use the Ballistic Tools Go/No Go gauges, they're great. I gauge all my brass now, I hate seating primers in a loose pocket and wasting them.
