no extraction

so i have a borden br action with a heavy krieger bbl, chambered in 6.5 gt( a 6 gt necked up)
it will chambe case or a dummy round but will not extract.
if i hand feed the bolt with a dummy in the bolt face (from the rear past the bolt release), it will extract that round.
cases are to short to hand feed past the chamber shoulder..so cannot try that.
this is action 2 chamber by my smith. no issues on the atlas.
so it appears to be some sort of extractor issue....but i go no clue.
i probably cannot call jim borden till monday...so i am asking here..what to look for, check ???
br dual port 308 bolt face coned bolt rbre
thanks

Rule out the extractor functions properly. Then seat a dummy round long to make sure the chamber is not too deep. If it grabs the case seated long but not an empty sized case, check headspace. Then check if there is anything in the chamber area that would keep the extractor from grabbing the case rim, perhaps impeding it from moving outward enough to grab the rim.

Almost certainly a mechanical thing that should be fairly easy to diagnose. As others have alluded to...datum to extractor groove and either the extractor grabs the rim or it doesn't.

Your extractor is not clipping over the rim into the groove.
two things can cause this. Either the inside face of the extractor is too close to the bolt face, or the case is going too far into the chamber.

You didn’t say. Will it extract after firing? if so, it is an initial headspace problem, either caused by the chamber cut too deep, or you somehow pushed the shoulders back too far.

Years ago, I had the same problem when working with a friend's new rifle. The gap between the extractor claw and the bolt face was so tight and if a case was a little short at the shoulder it would not extract. The chamber headspace was correct, but the brass that I tried in the chamber had been sized too short to be picked up in a different rifle.

UNFIRED, just got it today and must inlet a used stock then bed...it is big and heavy..could be fired out of the stock(11.5 lbs)
it does close on a go gage, i will have to "tape" it up tp be a no go
thanks

most of the brass is unfired and mybe short, but i did try some fired unsized and a pc from the other rifle. same answer no extraction.
will measure some cases

Try expanding the neck up to a slightly larger caliber and then forming a false shoulder. I am betting that if you do this to get some feel as you close the bolt the extractor will work just fine. When you can, give Jim a call.

This is the first thing I’d try

ok taped go gage closes at 1.3605(spec is 1.3607)
does not close on 1.3620
as close as i can "measure"
new brass measures 1.3525..about 5 thou under min spec
fired brass(from other rifle) is1.357...right at min
have to see what i have for a false shoulder in bigger then 6.5
thanks

Just wrap some tape around a case neck/shoulder to create a tight chamber and see if that creates a lock into the extractor for extraction, if this works it a head space issue. Putting it on the base creates a thicker rim and could limit the extractors ability to grab.

yes i have smaller bushings, but the truth is i have lots of work to do before firing.
fired cases maybe fine, or some fix to tune it up.
i am not expecting a major hiccup..
borden actions have been very good for me

I love them. Very good actions! We're blessed to have a few truly top flight action makers. I'm a Borden man but you can't go wrong with a Borden, a Bat or a Kelbly. There are other good ones but these are sure bets and resale is best on these 3 IMO.

well to be clear, i have BAT, borden and kelbly..and a stiller( special project).
i have done well with my action selections

so i talked to jim this am. he agrees with short factory new brass to false shoulder for fire forming.
i will do that when i get inletting and bedding done
thanks
