No Dancing for Awhile

Well, they've finally got room in the shop for me. My Chick is dropping me off in the morning, and the mechanic is taking all this hardware out. If everything goes well, I'll wake up with both feet and a couple weeks worth of good dope. If things go bad, I'll wake up with Jesus.




I'm looking at a solid 3 months with no weight on that foot, and by my calculation that will reduce me to the physical capacity of most 18 year olds.

I've got plenty of projects that I can do from the seat of my pants, and a peg leg that I can strap on and use after the first couple of weeks. I won't be surprised if y'all get pretty sick of me around here. I realize that sometimes I go on and on and----- jd

Glad to hear that they are getting you into the shop to get all the hardware out. I had a fixator on my lower leg and when I came in to get it all out they just unscrewed all the rods and took it out with no pain meds. Blood was squirting out the holes like a drinking fountain. But that was the VA. I'm sure you will not have that problem. Gods speed to a full recovery.

And, what is enabling them to remove the hardware and everything still works for you?

Back story is that back in the first of November, 2016 I was trying to beat the weather putting a metal roof on my shop. A cloud leaked a little rain on me and I surfed off the roof quicker than -- an idiot off a metal roof. Things were OK until I hit the ground.

That heel bone (calcaneus) was shattered into about ten pieces I guess, and whatever tendon and ligament damage besides. That first picture is after almost two month of healing. jd

Ouch. The brother of a friend of mine came off a ladder while painting a house. The result was essentially the same. He's healed up now but it took him out for a while.

I've sworn off ladders. Known too many guys over 50 who took a fall and most weren't ever the same.
As a young man, I took a few falls and mostly bounced. Now? I've no doubt I'd crunch with no rebound movement at all.
I'd sound like Loki from Marvel after Hulk pounded him on the floor.

My wife had all of her hardware removed after appx 14 months after her mishap, she had shattered her lower leg where it connected to the Ankle. She had a mis-step on some stairs, Oh, that didn't look pretty - the foot was pointing appx 90 degrees where it should not of.

lot of guys around here who build pole barns eventually do the same type thing. when my ladder fell over in sept i must have rode it part way down as i landed on my side and cracked a vertebre, instead of my foot. good luck with it all.

A friends son broke his foot a few years ago, he worked Commercial HVAC, he went up a ladder to the roof to service a unit, his apprentice decided to move the ladder to a different location (not as secure as the original location) when he came down the ladder, it came down with him on it. he shattered his foot and has had 2 surgeries on it and he is doing well now. He went in to have his hardware removed today as well.

Being in my 70's, I try to avoid ladders as much as I can.

Yep, I had a Maple tree (45-55 ft tall) removed this summer, 10-15 years ago I would have removed it myself. It was an easy job, no structure in the way. But, being 70's if something was to happen, I'm sure it could of been life changing.

FYI - a Bessey Clamp or Ratchet straps are great methods to secure a ladder

I was at my shop and some Pines had low hanging branches, smacking your head on.
So I threw a ladder up and ratchet strapped around the tree and went to trimming about 10 feet up with my tophandle saw.
I was hanging on with one hand and using the saw with the other when the Landlord saw me and began yelling and freaking out at me.
Haha, after I showed him it was ratchet strapped, he simply looked at me funny with a confused look and said
"Oh, I never thought of that"

Well thats why I also suggested a Bessey Clamp, they are quick adjust sliding type C-clamp for those who dont know what they are
We used them in the welding industry to clamp to an I beam and lift it up or for securing Connection plates together. Hundreds of pounds of clamping force, they dont twist like a cheap C-Clamp.
So lets say when you throw your ladder up to the roof
Place the vertical strut of the ladder against a rafter that sticks out, and clamp the side rail of the ladder to it
It wont go nowhere if you wrench down on the Bessey.
Also you can clamp the bessey to an underside rafter and tie a rope to that, then throw your rope over the top of the roof since there is very little to tie off to on top of a roof.
My roof is about 20 feet high and have to go up there a lot to clean pine needles, clean the chimney pipe etc so have figured out ways to do it safely.
