I actually can’t remember the last time I was out. It’s been that long.
Anyway, I set up on two hogs this afternoon that I’ve seen before on the new farm I lined up about two weeks ago. While walking in I spotted two fawns that were past the spotted stage, three turkeys and one coyote. First one I’ve ever seen in my area. It was about 50 yards away standing at the edge of the woods and an open field. Its head was behind a tree between us. That’s probably the reason I saw it and it didn’t see me. It was there only a moment when it turned and dropped down the other side of the ridge. How cool was that!
Got set up and waited about an hour and a half, but nothing showed. The temps dropped the last three days and there was a cool breeze blowing. And although I was dressed for the weather, I decided to pack it in and head to another farm where they just started cutting the hay. Figured I might see something. Pulled into the back of the property and it wasn’t more than a few minutes when I saw one on the side of the hill at the back of a retention pond. Had the T/C in 204 with me. Ranged the distance at 160 yards. Settled the gun and the breathing and let go the 32 grain V-Max. Whack! Dead hog.
She had her back to me when the shot went off. The entrance wound is just off center to the right and the exit track looks like it came out of the hog’s mouth. Check how the bottom teeth are out of line. And that was it for the day. Time is running out here in NJ. Season ends on the 30th of this month and we’re away for the coming week visiting our son, daughter-in-law and two young granddaughters.
