Nightforce Spotting scope

Here is my application:

Using a spotting scope while you shoot allows you to see the mirage. It is a much more accurate indicator of the wind than flags. With this setup, I can see through my scope and spotting scope at the same time, like a pair of binoculars. I'm not flipping up my shooting glasses to look through the spotting scope.

Whether magnification or LER is more important is for each individual to decide. But you can't have both.

Actually you can have both, just not with the Meopta/Cabelas/Nightforce Spotting Scope. With the Kowa, you can use one eyepiece for prone shooting and another for hunting. When/if Meopta offers a LER eyepiece, I'll consider it as a viable alternative.

I see. That set up makes sense for LER.

I meant you can't have high variable magnification and LER in the same eyepiece. The Meopta is geared more towards hunters who require a higher level of optical performance at long range, so you probably won't ever see a fixed power eyepiece available for the scope, unless there is an overwhelming public demand for one. But in the hunting world, variable is what people want.

The vast majority of my use of a spotting scope these many (>50) years has been on the range. When I looked at the Nightforce at the NRA convention, the lack of eye relief while wearing shooting glasses is what turned me off. I am still using my TSN3. I just have not found a scope that works better for a shooter. But, that's just me.

Never looked through one,
I hear maybe made by meopta?

Yes, I believe they are made by Meopta! The Nightforce TS82 is the best spotter I have ever looked through,
beats Swaro by a long shot, IMHO, I have never looked through a Meopta though, but have heard they are outstanding as well.

Hate to break it to y’all, but I went to cabelas today to buy the “instinct euro HD” they had one that was on sale but when I asked about the warranty he said once BPS bought them they no longer give or honor the lifetime warranty.
I walked away.

I use The Kowa TSN 823M Prominar with a 30x wide eyepiece and doint think i giving up much in the way of reading mirage compaired to latest hd spotting scopes.

I can assure you that they are not made by Kowa. I own a Nightforce TS82. It's quite a bit different than the Kowa. Especially the focus adjustment! It's a quality piece of glass. I have had the Nightforce next to the Kowa Prominar and you can see very clearly that the Nightforce is better. I had 3 other people say the same thing when we did the test at Camp Butner @ the 1k line. I also had a very good shooter at Bridgeville look through it and compare it to his Kowa and a Vortex spotter he said the same thing. "The Nightforce was better."

I can't comment on the Zeiss or Swaro. I have not been able to compare the Nightforce to them. I only know of one guy that uses a Swaro and I haven't seen him in a while.

I would recommend buying one it's worth the money.

I should think that depends on which Kowa Prominar you were using in your comparison. Kowa has 3 models of the Prominar; the TSN 550 and TSN 880 have fluorite crystal lenses while the TSN-770 has XD lenses. I seriously doubt anyone would think an ED-glassed spotter would be better than a fluorite crystal-glassed spotter, unless of course, they were comparing the 82mm Nightforce to the 55inch Kowa; the oldest trick in the book.

I will add that I do not have a dog in this fight; I have a Kowa TSN-82 with the 27X LER eyepiece for competition and the 20-60X eyepiece for Digiscoping duties. I also believe that for mirage divining duties, one does NOT want the best glass in spotters since in my opinion, ED glass and fluorite crystal glass seem to attenuate the effects of mirage, which is counter-productive to the task at hand.

I think I posted this 4 years ago. The ED and Fluorite scopes do outstanding when looking at mirage.
