Nightforce or Schmidt Bender?

Hi guys,

I'm setting up a new Remington 40xb 7mm saum for BR. Going to be shooting 300-600 yards and eventually 1000 yard. I can not decide which scope to puchase? I really like the nightforce BR 8-32 x56 series but have been reading mixed reviews about the parallax adjustment.

So if I step up to the NXS model the price goes up $500 or so. And not able to find it in CH style recticles which I prefer?

So at that point for a few more bucks should I just go for the Schmidt Bender PMII 12-50x56 with recticle #6 or 8? Or is this scope overkill for bench rest shooting.

I'm open to other scope and recticles Recommendations....

Thanks for your help.

I have a bunch of BR's and never noticed a problem with the parallax adjustment, other than it's a bit of trouble to reach out and change it while varminting...
But for bench shooting where the distance is known it's not even a little problem..
Probably more NF's on the line than S&B's...

As Preacher said, the AO will probably give you more precise parallax adjustment. I believe that you can get the CH reticles on both the BR and NXS series now. I've heard that the S & B scopes are "top of the line" as far as tacticals go, but I've never seen one at any of the ground-hog matches that I attend.

I have both NXS and BR Nightforces and each has its own role. The BR is the way to go for fixed distance shooting. As Gman noted, the AO does offer more precise adjustment than the side knob. The side knob is excellent when shooting unknown distance or frequently changing distance. At the price, a Nightforce BR cannot be equaled. I recommend the 12-42 BR for the additional capability. Under ideal conditions, the 42X does help. I never shoot any of my Nightforces at 12X.

The S&B will trump the Nightforce as far as glass quality. I sold my S&B PMII 5-25 last year to buy 2 NF BR 12-42's. Then I came with in a knats eyelash of buying a S&B 12-50 like you speak of. But chickened out and bought a third NF BR 12-42. I am very comfortable buying a scope with NF's reputation, and know exactly what I am getting when I take it out of the box and mount it on my rifle. The NXS IMHO is more oriented towards a tactical or LR varminting scenario. Reason I chickened out on the S&B: the amount of cash for it, and knowing it cost more possibly than the rifle I may have planted it on. And then not using it enough to warrant keeping it dust free. BUT: They are one heck of an optic!!

Thanks for the input? I'M going for the NF BR 12x42 and the money I save will go to a new gun eventually.

So my next question is which are the best mounts to go with? Should I stick with NF mounts? I really want great quality to match the scope and rifle. And does anybody know if the rem 40x mounting holes are different than a model 700?

The mounting holes for your 40X are the same as the 700 sa. I personally like Ken Farrel 20 MOA bases and his rings as well.

For the money, the EGW base is as good as any I've used, along with the Burris Signature rings. Pair the both of them up and you can't go wrong..

The Burris rings look great.

Now what tools are the best for setting up the scope and bore sighting?

Thanks a ton for the great info.
