Nightforce NXS 12-42x56 Np-R1

Hey Guys,

Im new to long range shooting and the forum. looking for some advice on a new scope for a rifle im currently building.

I only have the stock so far its an AICS stage 1.5. Im going to add a remington 700 action, wanted a surgeon but cant find any here, i live in Australia) with a custom barrel in .308 undecided on barrel length and twist rate yet.

I want to shoot at 1000 yards as often as i can but also be able to shoot 100 yards.

The scope im looking at for the moment is a Nightforce NXS 12-42x56 with Np-R1 reticle. Im fairly set on the scope but undecided on the reticle as i cant actually see any before i buy it.

Anyone have any opinions on the NP-R1 reticle? Is there too much reticle pattern to clearly see targets from 100-1000 yards? What distance will become too busy to see the target? Which is the better reticle for long range work around 1000 yards the np-r1 or npr2?

Thanx,
Morgo

I have the NP-R1 on my NXS 5.5-22....it is mounted on a AR-15 platform. For my intended purposes it works very well. I'm not convinced it would work so well for me shooting benchrest 1000 yards. It seems too busy for my eye. Having said that, I have the NP-1RR on my varmint rig...and I know it bothers me tremendously shooting at long ranges. I'm going to move into a 12-42x on my current project...which will be for shooting 1000 yard...but I'm looking at the NP-2DD or one of the CH reticles. I think you'll find them less busy..unless you have tactical uses for your rig as well.

As far as barrels....I'm sold on the 5R rifling especially if your rig is multi purpose. Many barrel makers offer this type of rifling. I found it built up less fouling. Which allowed longer cleaning intervals.

Twist rate? Depends on which projectiles you want to use. My .308 came with a 1:11.25" 5R 24 inch barrel. It shot extremely well witht 168 and 175 gr. bullets.

Good Luck....just some of my observations...I'm far from having any expertise.

All my scopes have the NP2DD reticule in them except for one with the MLR in it, and that will be replaced one of these days.
Hit the Nightforce web sight and look at the reticules offered, and make your choice..

Thanx for the info guys, with the 12-42x56 what size base should i get so i can shoot 100yards and then shoot past 1000yards, assuming its mounted on a remington 700 action. Will the 12-42 have enough internal elevation to shoot from 100yard zero to beyond 1000yards with a .308?

I'm not sure how far beyond 1000 yards you'll be able to shoot with the .308...accurately. I haven't run data or tried it personally. Instead, I've moved on....and am converting my .308 to a 260 A.I. Most guys recommend a 20 moa base.

Good Luck,

Wayne
