nightforce are old ones better

are the lenses in the old nxs better are there any difference cosmetically or should i go for the new ior with bigger target turrets they will do 24 moa per turn i believe

I just sold my 6 month old NSX. I bought it based on all ther glowing comments. The adjustments are great but The glass in those scopes is very substandard for a scope of that price. I have many good quality optics, leica, zeiss, swarovski) as well as leupolds and bushnell elites which are pretty good. The $400 elites have far superior contrast compared to a nightforce.Nightforce needs to get their act together and atleast get some good coatings on that glass.

niceone, you should know, from reading the posts on this, and other sites, that everything that is older, is better. Older Rem 700's, older Win. M70's, paper shotshells, 51 Plymouths, etc. etc., etc.:)

It would be great if NF and Leupold offered hi-dollar glass as an option. With that, they could charge another $1,000 and many would pay it,I would).
But then, it would be nice if Swarovski offered scopes with half the field functions of a Mk4..

Other companies would bridge the gap, if it weren't for their particular themes.. This ones metric, that ones FFP, and over here a hodge-podge of MOA and MILs mixed, etc. They just don't nail it.

I think a MARCH/MK4/med-fine crosshair combination at around $2,500 would be an incredible do-all scope.
So that's what I'd pay Leupold for one,if offered).

Nightforce has so much going for it but that glass is simply junk. I would gladly pay an extra 500-1000 for a nightforce with with german quality glass.

Wow,
Surprised to hear that based on all the glowing reports. I've looked through the older benchrest models and they certainly appeared clear enough, but again only looked. I would be curious if others have similar observations.

IOR uses Schott glass, which I believe, is the finest optical glass in the world. I don't know who Nightforce uses but I suspect it is Japanese. While nothing wrong with Japanese glass, Schott glass is ahead of the pack. I was looking on the IOR website, and they certainly have some nice scopes.

Well Lou, I was expecting a much much better optical devise in the nightforce when I ordered it.To say I was disappointed in it is an understatement. I simply call it like a see it. I have no axe to grind or anything. For shooting at paper at high noon the nightforce overcomes it's optical weakness by it other great features. I mean this is a really really good scope in every other way but OPTICALLY. I compared the nightforce side by side with a top end leupold, bushnell elite, a zeiss conquest and a zeiss v/mv. Optically the nightforce resolution was ok/fine but in every other aspect it was simply a pile of dung. This was the first expensive optical instrument I bought without running it through a battery of optical tests . I bought it based on 2 things 1) I needed a target scope 2) all the glowing comments/reviews. All optics have strengths and weaknesses.Optically speaking I find it hard to give praise to the nightforce in any way.It is very average optically speaking.Perhaps the people commenting on them have never really seen good optics.Incidently, optically the zeiss v/mv series scope was well ahead of the others mentioned and way way beyond the nightforce. I am also surprized no one has mentioned this before.I wish someone would have.

Based on what you have just posted I will make it a point to spend time with my friend's Nightforce. As I said, I looked through it but didn't really hunker down and truly examine it the way I should. If that scope is marginal in the optical department I would not spend that kind of money. I have looked through quality German optics and they are definitely superior to anything I've ever seen.

I looked through a March but, again, didn't really spend enough time with it to make a decision. I never looked through an IOR Valdada but I would be willing to bet their glass is top quality.

Thanks for being honest. I think people tend to deceive themselves when they spend that kind of money and the product is not the quality they expected. Just call it like it is, don't sugarcoat it!

Also make sure to try the scope/scopes in varying conditions, ei; low light, dawn/dusk),rain,cloudy,looking towards the sun etc etc. These can often show strengths/weaknesses in scopes very quickly. This is were good optics really show themselves. At high noon on a bright day just about any scope looks pretty good at first glance.

if you dont want a nightforce or a leupy because of poor glass buy a USO and have them put any bells and whisles on them that you want
Nathan

As far as I know I can't get the USO in canada. Too many rules now for u.s companies to export. I think I am going to go with the new Schmidt and bender 12.5-50 X 56 . I can actually get it cheaper than a March or USO anyways. I will be checking into it on tuesday.

Yes, it was originally for an air rifle but they made a second version with adjustable parallax for long range shooters. I still have to verify this though.

You're right about using the scope in varying conditions to determine the strengths and weaknesses. I have several scopes that are fine on the bench but laying down in a meadow and sighting in on a cagey PA groundhog at 400 yds. is an entirely different matter.

Interesting reading. I've had my Nightforce NXS for over a year now and have used it on targets, out in the field shooting rabbits and crows and under the spotlight at night. If I was going to buy a top end scope again I would get another Nightforce.

Everyone judges things differently, each to their own.

Cheers
Dave

Well,I would urge you to borrow someone's german optics to compare under those same conditions. Only then will you realize just how substandard the optics are in the nightforce. The nightforce isn't cheap so in my opinion the optics should be much much better than they are.. For example : you mention using the nightforce under a spotlight at night. With my german mader zeiss I don't need a spotlight. I can shoot raccoons all night long under moonlight out to about 100-300 yards in most instances depending on the background of course, try that with a nightforce and you will quickly learn that you can't see squat out of it).
I thought I would add: it is legal to shot raccoons at night for pest control/ crop damage.

I have a few high end optics floating around here myself, and no way will I ever part with any of my Nightforces for anything else, different strokes for different folks I guess...
I really doubt they use sub standard glass in them either....
I do like my new Sightron-S3 8x32 though, clear as can be, and the price is right.
