That photo is right after I cut it off on my table saw. I cleaned the burrs out, beveled it a little with a counter sink and polished it with 400 grit lapping compound on a round head brass screw.

I bet it was a Henry .22 magnum. I have a Henry that would keyhole just like yours. The good news is they have great customer service and warranty. They installed a new barrel and had it back to me in about 10 days. It shoots great now. I think they had a bad run of barrels with bad rifling.

Looking for some advice.

For xmas, my (incredible) wife gave me a brand new rifle in 6.5 prc. I've been shooting/reloading AR-15s but this is my first real bolt-action.

Upon borescoping it, the crown seems messed up...but I'm not sure how big a deal to make out of it. For transparency, all I've done with this gun is unboxed it (ie no hap-hazard cleaning). I just e-mailed the manufacturer today to see what they say. But was curious what I should be pushing them to do here (new rifle, recrown the barrel)?

Yes, it should be replaced, appears to be too much copper fouling for being just test fired.
Being a retired machinist with machine tools if it was mine I'd just recrown it in a few minutes. But that's not for the average guy, and you shouldn't have to. A company should stand behind their products.

Maybe. I met a guy in a local gun shop. He ordered a Henry 2 years ago. He was stopping in to see if it had come yet. He wasn’t happy when he heard “No”. It was a large loop 44Mag. Maybe that had something to do with it?

Henry is just that far behind. They are making their popular models the most and they are over a year out

An update. Talked to them on Friday because the online tracking system said pending return delivery. Seems their system was misleading, i t failed their accuracy tests. The next step is a mandatory second opinion (manager review?). They made it sound like a replacement rifle was likely. If that is the outcome, it means 4-6 weeks due to ATF paperwork. Overall, would be happy if that is where I end up.

Don't think so. When S&W replaced a 629 revolver for me, new firearm requires 4473 background check. I went through my normal FFL and S&W reimbursed me for the transfer. Owner could have become ineligible since original acquisition.

Most times they destroy the old ser no and its transferred to the new item which you already own

IF you sent personally, should land on your doorstep with adult signature required.

Well the wife gets a gold star ️. Good news is they acknowledged the accuracy issue, I can’t imagine a manager reviewing that and not taking care of it. Glad you took the time to look at the barrel!

I have no idea what the regulations are but I sent a rifle to Henry for the replacement of a defective barrel. About 2 weeks later I received the same serial number back. It was definitely a new rifle with the same serial number. There were no FFL involved.

This is the way they should do it, and its the only way ive seen it done
