Next action?

New rifle will be back from the smith in a week or two at most hopefully so starting to toss a few idea’s around for the next build. This build will be for hunting purposes, so I’d like an action that is strong and reliable. I’m going back and fourth over a couple and have narrowed it down too bighorn tl3 or defiance deviant. If impact comes out with a long action anytime before I purchase one it will be in the running’s too but for now it’s these two actions.

From what I’ve been told, the defiance is smoother, just slick all around. But the bighorn dlc’d isn’t far behind plus it is better in the rough conditions.

Any input?

I have a custom rifle coming in (picking up on Monday) that is built on a bighorn TL3. I have never used one though. I bought it for this build after the smith doing the work recommended it, and it was a little cheaper than a defiance.

My buddy shoots a defiance deviant action, though. It is an insanely accurate rifle. Receiver is butter smooth. No issues with jamming or extracting. We used it at a competition this month, and it didn’t fail us. I don’t think you could go wrong with a defiance.

Have you looked into the Borden Alpine and Timberline actions? They're very nice too! There are numerous good custom actions for hunting rifle builds out there, fortunately..but I became a Borden fan soon after he started making his actions in house. I'm not sure there is a better action available at any price. I don't mean for this to read like an ad for him but rather, I simply believe his work is second to none and I've seen most all of them over the years. Honestly, in a hunting rifle, most any action can get the job job just fine. I think his are at the top of the crop, though.

I’ll be extremely curious as to your throughts on your new bighorn tl3! I’ve heard it takes a little to break in like most actions but love to hear your thoughts!

I’ve only heard of Borden actions on this site so many times it slips my mind. I’ve never seen one.

I recently used a Big Horn action for a hunting rifle. It was their Origin action, not the TL3. I am really liking the mechanical ejection.

I’ve tried them all. Borden wins hands down. If I was to order any action at all without trying it, it would be a Borden. Seriously... has anyone ever not liked a Borden? Not that I have ever seen. But if you don’t want to start an addiction then don’t buy one plain and simple.

What’s the difference between the alpine and the timberline actions? What makes the Borden so much better then other actions (looking for people who have or use both)

I love Borden! Just built a new Bat, no comparison. I've tried a lot of actions and the Bordens are like glass. It's very depressing that everything after a Borden feels cheap.

Darrin

What bat do you have and what makes the Borden better. I have only shot 1 and handled a few bats and they are pretty impressive

The Alpine is a short action 700 footprint with weight reducing scallops out of the side
The Timberline is a long action 700 footprint w/ weight reduction scallops out of the side
The Mountaineer can be LA or SA and is 100% round. It can also have an integral lug.

FWIW, would strongly recommend that you go for an action that has a one piece bolt for a hunting rifle. If you have never experienced a soldered-on bolt handle coming off, it's hard to understand my concern about this, but on a hunting rifle that could see some abuse it could be a critical characteristic of your action. Defiance is one piece and Borden can be; I know there are others. The only other characteristic that I think is worth considering is controlled round feed, just more reliable.

Here you go. It’s next tomy gen II 5R in 6.5 creedmoor. It’s a Bighorn TL3 in .308 winchester. The 5R is all stock minus the bolt fluting and 40X trigger. I can’t get a video to upload. If you pm me I can text it to you. It’s definitely smooth and extremely easy to lift.
