Newbie Question

Gents,
I've been reading this forum for a short while. I've done some varmint hunting back in the northeast and am shooting a savage .223 and .308 at paper.

Any suggestions, pro/con about the Remington 40XBR?
Caliber suggestions?
Glass?

Thanks in advance

For not much more you can have a custom rifle ;) WHat are the new 40x's running 1700-1800?

Need to know how far you plan to shoot the furry critters before suggesting glass...

JB,
Right now I'm getting decent groups at 200 & 300 yards. Getting the groups tighter interests me right now. What caliber is a good starter, beyond .223 and .308)? Thanks, ED

Read the title up top ^^^ :D :D

THe 6br is tough to beat for all around fun varmint and paper round to 1000yds.

JB,
I see that there are a lot of custom builders out there. Are there any suggestions? Also in my thought patterns are the Rem. 40XBR and getting another Savage and starting from the gound up.

Once upon a time, the .222 was THE cartridge to shoot in BR events. It sounds like the 6mmbr has taken its place.
Thanks, ED

Ed -- cant help you on the savage, though sharp shooters supply would be a good place to start ;)

Where are you located? Do you want to be able to drive to the smith or is mailing things OK?

JB

check with "milanuk" on here he is out your way, as well as m700 -- they are both good guys, and will be able to set you straight locally.

my guy is in PA, so shipping might get expensive :D

We really need a little more information to help you.

I see that you are interested in tighter groups - at which ranges and how far out would you like to be able to shoot well?

Are you shooting strickly from a bench, or do you want to be able to hunt, or compete in NRA type highpower events? Or all of these?

How much $$$ do you feel comfortable spending on this new blaster and scope?

How much wind do you ahe to contend with?

Everything in life is a compromise, but there are few compromises in shooting that cannot be resolved with $$$$$$$$.

I'm looking for an entry level rifle. I'm thinking about $2000+/- for the rifle only. From what I've been reading, the 6.5mmbr may be the way to go. Nesika? McMillan stock? Barrel? Trigger? Thanks, ED

$2000 may be a little light for a full on custom with optics BUT...

A Surgeon action would be a pretty good place to start at under $1000 and there is the mag fed and single shot options there. They advertise on this sight and you can read up on Terry Crosses rifle using this action in the archives. It will fit any stock that a Remington 700 short action will.

Pretty much any barrel from a reputable maker will work, my current favorite is Lothar Walther but I've had exceptionally good Douglas, Hart and Shilen barrels.

More important than the barrel irself is the chambering and mounting and here top quality smithing is a must. There are no substitutes, no work arounds, no alternatives. Make sure you and the smith are on the same page BEFORE any work is started.

As far as a trigger goes, a Shilen is just fine and a Shilen for a Remington will pin right on a Surgeon.

Stocks? A matter of personal preference. I tend towards McMillans. The particular style would be determined by your useage. I do not consider the tactical stocks good in the woods stocks, my favorite walking stock is a McMillan Sako Varminter which has a mild flair to the fore end but is still very trim. In tacticals I like the A-3 and A-5.

With the Surgeon all you need is rings and a scope that will let you get a 100 yard zero.

A rig like that would likely run a bit over the $2000 mark but you would have a lot of rifle to show for it.

Rust,
I've decided that the scope will be a Leupold. They are just down the road from me and have a good customer service rep.

Where can I get more info on Lothar barrels?

I've been drifting toward a McMillan stock myself with a Kreiger barrel; Shilen triggers have been around a long time; action - TBD. Or, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, buy a complete rifle.
Thanks again, Ed
