Newbie Load question for 6.5 Creedmoor

New to Shooters Forum. Great site. Just picked up my first 6.5 Creedmoor and am looking for a slow powder to push 143-147 grain bullets down a 24" barrel. With the shortage of RL26 I was wondering if anyone has any data on IMR7828 or IMR7828SSC. I've had great results in my 300win mag with 190 and 200 grain bullets with IMR7828. Curious to see what kind of results anyone's had using it. Thanks

Welcome aboard
I'll be watching for response also for the same reason.
My brother in law is running rl17 with 147s molly coated with great results, but it is also becoming scarce.

Seek out the carolina load on here and go shoot.
I did, shot in low .2s at 100yds for me
44gr at my mag length of 2.835
44.6gr at 2.80
I still have h4831sc left and 50 pieces of prepared brass and was planning on doing just that.
I need to shoot it at distance and see how they hold up.

Thanks for the input everyone. Gives me something to think about. I can find data on the superformance, and the H4831sc. Do you have any load data on the H1000 for starting loads? Thanks again

I don't have any real world experience with the components you're inquiring about.
But I have Quickload, tho not the latest version so it doesn't have the 143/147 Hornady bullets.
I can run some #'s with a custom 147 gr bullet ( at 1.440" long, pretty close to the 147eldm) with H-4831sc and IMR-7828ssc which might give you some idea where to start and maybe where you might start encountering hints of pressure.

COAL can make a difference when it comes to pressure and (obviously) how much powder can fit.

H-1000 is too slow. You'll be crunching the powder before even reaching 50,000 psi.

Quickload shows

47 gr H-1000 = 111% case fill, 51,500 psi, 2,650 fps.

48 gr H-1000 = 114% case fill, 55,750 psi, 2,715 fps.

Now worth the time and components in my opinion.

In my experience... H-4831sc has ALWAYS been a very accurate powder, with no exceptions, and that's what I would try first.

Great info, following this with interest . I am new to the 6.5 Creedmoor . I have Peterson small primer brass and some Hornady 123s on the way ,hoping I have the right powder on hand . Just started looking for loads.

Just shot 29 rounds today of the ELD-M 147 with Alpha brass and 43.5gr of SuperPerformance at 60f temp. Stock RPR with 24" barrel.
Couple outliers due from too much dwell time in the chamber, no pressure signs.

Rnds=29 Avg=2663 hi=2693 lo=2625 sd=14 es=68
Almost all the rounds were actually right around 2665, just a few outcasts pushed that hi/low.
I had a few hard to seat rounds which I just kept in the mix and I had a loose grip on a few shots.

There was room in the case for a little more powder if I wanted as well, but this looks to be a node on my gun, so I'm going with it.

Edit: Created graph, little more variance than I thought, still may be my poor shoulder tension. :)

Sounds like you are dialed in. Does the Alpha brass use small or large rifle primers? I'm trying to decide on brass. We have Lapua, Starline, and Hornady available locally. I know Lapua is top dog and uses small primers but it's way more expensive. The Starline and Hornady available here use large primers. What is the advantage of small primers over large primers and vice-versa?

You can achieve higher pressures with srp but may need to bush the firing pin.
My brother in law is using alpha and likes it alot even comes packaged in a box ready for loaded ammo. Priced comparable to lapua

I have about half a jug left of 7828ssc that I got during the Obama powder panic. Might be an unusually fast burning lot but I have got some really good velocities from it with the heavies in both 6.5x47 and 6.5 Creedmoor.

What is the advantage of small primers over large primers and vice-versa?

When shooting loads at the MAX safe powder charges, the small rifle primer brass will hold the primer pockets tight for many many reload cycles. The Larger primer pockets usually open up after a handful of reloads with MAX charge weights.

With small rifle primers in the 6.5creed and especially the 6creed & 243win using slow burning powders, it's wise to use Magnum primers in cold temps. I use CCI-450 and Fed 205m are good in all temps.
Fed 205m might not be marketed as a magnum primer, but I think it's more of a magnum primer than not.

Another talked about advantage to small rifle primers in mid size cases is more uniform ignition.

For the few (including me) who shoot in extremely cold temps, not only large primers are better, but primers with softer cups are more ideal. In those kinda temps I use Fed 210m/215m large primers and 205m for small primers
