newbie 6ppc build help

im thinking of slowly building a 6mm ppc benchrest. I'v read that theres alot of variations in neck size. I'd like to order a barrel & don't really know what neck size to go with. pretty much looking for the most common, accurate size. i read theres .262, .264, up to like .270. any reccomendations? i would be fire forming, as i read it would make better brass using the 220 russian.

Have to tell you that many years ago I was in the same situation as you are now. I wished that I had followed good advice that was given me.

Purchase a used 10.5 lb rifle and learn to shoot it. After a year, you will be ready to install a new bbl and will be able to take advantage of your experience and a fresh bbl.

You can purchase a complete rifle with a custom action and known good components for less money than you can build one. Then, if a year or so, customize it with new paint, install a fresh bbl. and go shoot some good groups.

That said, the old standard is a .262 neck using Lapua 220 Russian brass. Brass forming is very easy and should not present any problems.

I was thinking of going with shilen, or hart. was thinking of a savage model 12 lrpv action 07 model, & maybe a sharp shooters supply benchrest stock.anyone know of a gunsmith that would build all this up for me, true the action, timing, install barrel the whole works...

YEP!! Since it sounds like you do not want to do it yourself, Fred, right there at SSS is the Savage man..I love doing it myself. That's why I do Savages...

When I started planning for my PPC, I decided that I didn't want to be in a position where a change in gunsmiths, and therefore possibly reamer dimensions) would risk obsoleting expensive reloading dies, so I bought my own reamer. It has worked out well. Now I have, counting one for fire forming, five barrels with the same chamber, the only difference being an extreme spread of headspaces of .001. As it turns out, I have not changed smiths, but I still like having my own reamer. Additionally, I really like being able to get a new barrel by making a couple of phone calls, without having to send my rifle off. This has nothing to do with my owning a reamer, but it is a great way to go, and worth discussing with you smith before he does your first barrel. Good luck with your PPC. Any dimension between .262 and .269 should work just fine since most shooters are using bushing dies. Mine is a .262, and while it requires turning off more brass than a larger diameter, this has not been a problem.
