New York Keeps Losing Population . . .

This is what I have to work with . . .

Add my family to the list. My wife and I decided to pull the trigger and we bought a house in Lindale, Texas last week. I'm at a point in life where putting the retirement savings to use is around the corner and I'll be a monkey's uncle if I'm going to take a 10% haircut because moving snow and splitting firewood for five months out of the year is so much fun. That's a big negative on all counts! (Truth be told, I don't mind splitting wood all that much. Very therapeutic.)

We've been living in the Northeast for the last 13 years and we're looking forward to the change on many fronts. We'll miss where we live and we'll miss some good friends we've made in the area, but the winters and social/political climates are just oppressive. Just think - I'll be able to buy 20 and 30 round magazines, put functioning mag release buttons on my ARs and put that thumbhole stock back on my 10/22 again! No county-run pistol permitting processes, either. Woo Hoo!

I'll be setting up shop in our new surroundings some time this summer and with new equipment. So, if anybody out there within truck/trailer distance of central NY is looking for some machine tools, I have a couple of lathes, a vertical mill and various other tools I'll be selling. . .

Look up Panola County Gun Club when you get to Lindale. We have fun there.
Thanks for the tip! I checked it out briefly onlne. The 600 yd. line looks like a nice setup.

I'll be there. Hopefully, I'll have time to knock off some of the rust before the October matches.

me too..

First truck leaves tomorrow for western PA. This is a stop-gap move for us. "residence" still NY, a seasonal place. Stuff going to PA. Will collect my NY pension and take it out of state. After a few years, it is move west old man!

NY is just full of folks who get up every day trying to design ways that the state can make life "better" for us. First, it is easier to stand up cause our wallet gets lighter every day. Then it is easier to sit down cause they outlawed everything that is fun. Then it is easier to just curl up, cause they have legislated and propagandized immorality and behaviors, cramming it down our throats so much that it is safer to just stay in bed. Finally it gets easier to pack up 30 years of life and move elsewhere, cause staying gets to be such a pain in the nuts.

Good for you on the move.
If I didnt have a son at home (single dad) I would love to move to Texas and say goodbye to the cold Ohio winters.
Granted they are nothing like we had back in the 70s-80s as far a snowfall but, as I have gotten older my bones dont take to the cold much. As every year passes it seems I look foward to spring more and more every year.
Enjoy your new home and you new locale. :)

+1 for Panola County Gun Club. Shot a 1200 pt F Class match there. Nice people, didn't know anyone there (just moved to TX from FLA) all were friendly, helpful and made for an enjoyable time.

My parents left New York 30 years ago and moved to Georgia. I go there every couple of years to visit family. To say the least, I cannot stand the place. I have been all over the US, and I will never, ever leave the southeast.

$250,000 buys you a beautiful house on 10 acres in GA. With that same amount you'd be lucky to get a shack with no less than $10,000 a year in property taxes in NY.

I wish you and your family the best of luck with your move. These things can go only so smoothly.

Western PA is definitely a step in the right direction but have you picked a 'final' destination? We thought about Colorado but decided against it - too much California spill-over over the last 15-20 years. Wyoming? Beautiful, wide-open country but too windy. I like to shoot my .20s too much. I like where we settled. My wife grew up in East Texas, so this is a homecoming of sorts for her. We'll be close to her family and we can unleash our children on their grandparents to everyone's content. And Texans still refer to their state as The Republic of Texas. I like that.

I enjoyed reading your commentary on the (NY) state of affairs but it made me think I must be getting impatient in my maturity. My nuts are sore after only seven years. I was talking to my Florida resident Dad last night and he mentioned that the state seems to think that the cow has an unlimited amount of milk. I told him that the state had milked the cow dry and was fixing to butcher it. He liked that.

Again, best of luck with your move.

Thank you for the kind wishes.

I grew up in northeast Ohio and I'll never forget the winter of '77-'78. I was in undergraduate studies at that time and every single day was a struggle! My beat up old Rambler had a very hard time answering the bell most mornings. That was a nasty winter, even by central NY standards.

JLT I lived in Austin Texas for 4 years when I was stationed at Fort Hood. It was one hell of a commute, but well worth it. If you're anything like me (I am assuming you are, since we are both gun nuts on the same forum :D) you're going to LOVE TEXAS. Best of luck, oh and no state income tax....;)

You said it! The taxation climate pretty much sealed the deal. Real estate taxes are much more reasonable than my current environment and the top marginal rate for NY state income tax is within spitting distance of 10%, not to mention county taxes and school district taxes that are separate and distinct from real estate taxes. Oh, and sales tax rates that vary by county and city, but average between 8 and 9%. As a homeowner and a small business owner, I'm parting with over $30K every year in taxes associated with property ownership. Here's the real kick in the groin - we home school our children, so we derive no benefit from our funding of the public education system.

Ft. Hood? 1st Cav.?

One gun nut to another, I believe you're right. We're going to love Texas.

Been looking at Texas for a few yrs now , love it ! I just can't think of packing all I have .
I'm from south Florida . The humidity and heat kill me . I know Texas is hot but at least they have a fall and winter . This year I've not shut my air conditioner off .

I moved to Texas back in '78. I witnessed the beginnings of the downfall of New York State. It started with, believe it or not, a Republican, Nelson Rockefeller. He was, for all intents and purposes, a Democrat. He furthered the welfare state and taxes began to rise. I saw what was happening in New York and the first chance I got, I set out for Texas. Texas is, without a doubt, the BEST state in the union>>>period. Family circumstances forced a move on me to Arizona last year. Arizona is a good state, and the weather is certainly better>>>BUT T-Rust me, it 'taint Texas!

I'm with ya on the tax thing. I cannot for the life of me figure out how two people making $100 K combined for 15 years could have nothing when it was over...except that at EVERY turn I pay at least %10 on every transaction. Gas per gallon is about 20 cents taxed. Over thirty years that adds up to a lot of money that dribbled out of my bucket.

There's a hole in the bucket dear Liza, dear liza....

And our whiney putz nasal nosed chump of a govenor is setting himself up to be the darling of the angry left for 2020. Sheesh.

Maybe Texas would be ok. I did like OK when I visited.

Your more then welcome. Im a a touch envious of you Texans and western state guys.
Yeah, that 77 blizzard was a big thing it brought are area to a stand still.
I was only in middle school like 9th grade and it was a fun time.
Made for some good sledding/tubbing for sure. If I remember correctly me and my buddies made a killing for about five days shoveling snow. Loved it then hate it now. LOL

No, have not. Am in a forced move. Parent with Alzheimers on PA end, crazy landlord on NY end.

In time we hope for CO or OK. Hate the south...to humid and hot for my taste, but as I age....

NY is beautiful in summer. But it lasts two weeks.

Beat the rush, left NY (Nassau County) in 1970. Moving almost anywhere south and/or west of NY will be an improvement for you, and Texas is a grand choice. Hope you have as much fun as I think you will in your new Texas home.

The NAVY moved me to NE FL in 1975 and the wife loves it here. I travel to TX at least twice a year to shoot long distance with a good friend located in Copperas Cove. I was born in Syracuse, NY but will never go back, SNERT covered most of the reasons why.

It's not just New York, it's the East Coast as far as I'm concerned. Between the politics, taxes, and traffic, It sucks.
MD is a decent place to earn a living but in a couple years me and the wifey will retire and pack our sh*t and hopefully move in a western direction also.
