New Wildcat, now what to Build?

Go through every pawn shop and gun store where rifles are for sale (like me) and look for a J.C. Higgins M50, they are FN manufactured, a commercial version of the M98; they quit making them in towards the end of the 50's but that is not as late as 1944 or so. My last FN, a J.C. Higgins M50 (Sears Roebuck, Ted Williams) was acquired in 2002 and they would be extremely scarce now. No bolt bending or welding, no stripper clip slot hump or thumb cut in receiver but are drilled and tapped but need a trigger. I have 3 FN Mausers that go on hunting trips but would prefer a Remington or Savage for some long range precision rifle project. Not knowing much about other Mausers I won't comment on them.

I am New to the Long Range Shooting World. I admire the Mauser 98, and would love one in Brenneke. Can someone post a Source for Quality 98 Type Actions for my purpose? All I seem to find are folks pushing some type of Military Collectible items.

how bout a montana action if youre into that type of thing?

There's probably a chance that a Whitworth Mark X action could fill the bill. - Commercial 98 Mauser and they built them in both mag fed & single-shots. - Decent 98 Mauser for a custom project & long enough to accommodate the a 30-06 length cartridge

Ha, that was a hook in the Mouth eh? It's more like a 7mm Gibbs than anything, only it's different of course. Not really a .280 as that's much smaller in case capacity.

What Twist Rate do the 180's Require? Will a regular 280 Barrel Work? I would consider an XPR as a donor.

As best I remember, the ONLY factory 7mm Express factory round was for awhile when Remington called the 280 the 7mm Express. Is there another I'm not aware of? The 7mm Express & 280 is exactly the same cartridge, namely the 30-06 necked down with the shoulder bumped forwards slightly to prevent negligent chambering in a .270.

It's actually a 270 necked up with the shoulder moved forward a bit. Just picking a nit, I know. One fellow I knew was certain his wildcat, a 280 necked down to 270, took performance to incredible new levels. WH

isnt a 7mm Express the exact same thing as a 280 rem. The ammo is interchangable/same thing.
Same exact round, the .280 was introduces in 1957 I believe. Sometime in the late 70s the marketing genius' Remington wanted to cash in on the the success of the Rem 7 Mag, and thought changing the name of the .280 would boost sales. What happened was several people loaded these rounds into their 7 Mags and "problems arose". It wasn't long and the name was changed back to .280 Rem.

Why exactly would you say that "Remington" wanted to compete with Remington's Own Cartridge the 7 Rem Mag?? You are partially correct. In fact they gave the old 280 more Punch and Pressure to compete against the .270 "Winchester". In order to inform the public of the increased performance they changed the name to "7mm Express". Apparently folks at the Gun Counter perpetuated this confusion by selling this Newly named Cartridge incorrectly to the unsuspecting public. Granted this was decades ago and due to the ensuing confusion Buyers steered clear of 7mm Express-280 Rifles altogether. Which is Sad as today anyone familiar with 7mm knows the 7X64 Brenneke could be considered the Best Cartridge Ever. Essentially my Wildcat is an "Improved" 7X64. Alas!
