New unfired brass

With new unfired brass should you just load to fireform or should I run them through the di I to get better neck size. I am starting with 100 Norma 243 win. and 400 22-250 Lapua.

Thank You

I run a neck expander mandrel through all my new brass, followed by a trip through the sizer die before firing.

That is what I thought might be said. What kind of grouping should I expect if they had been fireformed first or I guess what I am asking is should I trust the groups I get at this time.

Thank You

If the new brass already fits the rifles chamber & neck tension is ok, sizing is not going to do anything for the brass. I load & shot 243 Win. Brand brass as it comes in the bag. Some Rem had dinged mouths, so they get bumped with the expander. If your going to do a full prep, then size, trim, uniform pockets, do flash hole, sort by weight. Accuracy out of the bag, about 3/4" With full prep & fire formed .3" @ 100 yds.

I treat unfired brass as if it were of unknown history - FL sizing, trimming, etc...

I deburr the primer flash hole, uniform the pocket, chamfer the inside and outside neck to remove burrs then size before I load the first time.

I have been loading since 60,s and seem to learn something new each day. Most of my loading is for hunting . With this new savage I am trying to understand what makes a better group, under 1 inch 5 shot was good with my 350,6.5,308,243 Etc. Trimming before fireforming would never have crossed my mind. What started this was a number of 6mm Nosler could be set by hand or pushed clear into the case by hand. I weigh my cases, my bullets and check most everything I can think of even each powder load is the same and I have been told not to
trickle ,cant stop that the line must be on the beam.

Thank You

I don't know about Norma.

For my virgin Lapua brass, the only thing I do out of the box is to run a mandrel through the mouth to round it out. There is nothing good that can be accomplished with resizing Lapua virgin brass unless your chamber is short. The flash holes of Lapua brass are drilled, so no need to uniform them and keep anything but primers out of primer pockets.

No need to chamfer or deburr that brass either and trimming is a waste of time for that virgin brass. There is a reason I am willing to spend extra money on Virgun Lapua brass as opposed to Winchester brass; I don't have to do anything to it but run the mandrel.

I'm guessing you have a bolt action Savage and if this ammo is specifically for ONE rifle, after the first firing, adjust the die to push the shoulder back about .002 or so from the fired case.

Use a boat tail bullet if loading right from the bag with no prep. It acts as an expander & doesnt need a perfect round case mouth.
