New to Thermal

Buy a scope and then a scanner.

640 for sure.

Nocpix prettt much has the world by the tail right now, and they have a slim 640 for $2500. You’d need a different base for it if it’s going on a bolt action.

I’m using an ACE H50R and scanning with a slim, which is also sighted in (QD mount) on my 22 for vermin.

I personally wouldn’t consider a centerfire scope without a rangefinder. It’s impossible to judge distance in a thermal. That’s why so many guys have used giant cartridges and small bullets in the past. We don’t have to do that anymore.

This is 227 yards. I would have thought he was about 80.

Would the 384 resolution on the scanner part be a total no-go then. Thanks.

384 is plenty for a scanner. Here’s a 6 pack from Saturday night. They’re about 180 yards. I dropped the scanner and got on the ACE.

Scanning with a thermal and shooting with a light seems like a great idea, except you’re blind for about 10 seconds when you get off the thermal. It just doesn’t work.

Thanks for that info as I see the 384 is some cheaper. Haha you answered my next question, currently using the Wicked lights. We just used the airplane landing lights a long time ago.

I grew up on an aircraft landing light. Switched to red handhelds and then white handhelds.

I put every light I had up for sale yesterday. There’s just no going back.

I’m going to sell that 384 slim after the March 21st hunt and get another bolt action thermal. I’ll still use a scanner, just not my own.

I thank you for your pics of the difference between the two resolutions. Now you have me pondering on the 640 slim to shoot on an MSR and take off to scan as a one time purchase. I will do some YouTube research.IMG_1400.webp

I think if youre using one of them there sissy guns then yes, it is gonna be tough to beat a 640 slim unless you jump up to the ACE H50R, which is going to be HUGE on a gas gun, but is great!
