New to the Forum, looking for a place to shoot 800+yds in N. Calif.

Hello!
Some friends and I (3-5 friends, all experienced shooters, but not past 600 yards) want to conduct a "shooting expedition".

Let me back up... We live in North Western California, in the redwoods, with no flat ground and no local shooting ranges over 200 yards within many hours drive.

We'd like to take our rifles, and gear, and targets, and if necessary, camping gear... and go do some shooting, spotting, coaching, zero'ing, and load testing from 300 to as far as we can hit a steel plate.

Ideally, perhaps, not on an organized range where we're beholden to range hours, having to be members, having to share the range, limited hours, etc. Not that any of those things are BAD, we're just looking for a more independent setting where we can stop and think, test, tune, shoot, record, etc at our own pace for 2-3 days. Camping out if necessary, driving our gear to the nearest town for a hotel works too. We're open to any organized range facility that would be happy to host non-local, non-member 'foreigners' using their range also!

We'd love to find some wide open BLM land or other SAFE area with 4wd truck access where we can set up, anywhere from the coast of California to western Nevada, and from the Oregon border (or even north of that) to about Sacramento on the south end. ideally with a mountain as a backstop, with the ability to set up target stands/steel plates 600-800-1000 or so yards away with a safe backstop and good visibility for range safety.

This isn't for an immediate trip... it's likely it'll be next year before we get our act together (two of us are still building rifles for this sort of thing, and I just moved so my reloading bench is still in boxes).

Suggestions for a place, or a range where some experienced shooters who pick up their trash and don't cause trouble, could go to get some hands on experience at ranges we've never had opportunity to shoot at - would be appreciated!

Contact the BLM and ask for a list of properties in NorCal that allow shooting.
The NE corner of CA/NW corner of NV and SE corner of OR make up a very large track of high desert within which there is BLM property. Hunting is certainly OK, as far as setting up a Long Range situation you will have to ask.

That is definitely one of the resources I plan on contacting! Thanks!

If anyone has a spot they've used successfully, I'd be eager to hear about it.

Unfortunately, though it's an excellent facility, it's a more regimented practice session than we're looking for (and a six hour drive for several of us, making the "hustle" even less desirable).

As I said, none of us have anything against great clubs and facilities like the Sac Valley club, but we're looking for a more relaxed "self teaching and debugging" time.
I do appreciate your taking the time to reply!

I don't know, Paul, but a deceased friend of mine, Jerry Tierney, was born and raised in Eureka back in the 40'ies. After visiting SACV many years ago, he moved to Plymouth just to be near; and became a regular fixture at the range until his passing.

It's a heck of drive for you but Palomino Valley in Sparks is a great place. The public range has steel out to 900ish and their 600 and 1K F is really laid back. No problem coming to just play a bit as long as you stay to help out.

That's well within range for us... Thanks for the lead!

Well, as organized ranges go, it's near the top of our list...

There are several ranges near Sacto that have 600+ capability. Silhouette shooters have matches to 500 meters several times a year at them. Not too far away just across the Oregon border is Bill Scholtes Klamath Sportsman's Park near Keno. They have a range to 600 that is rarely used. Josephine County Sportsman Park in Grants Pass has a 600 yard range, but I think you have to pay a $7 or $10 range fee. They do have a nice campground on site tho. There are a couple of ranges near Medford (Jackson County Sports park), but I think it requires a sanctioned match to get in. If you don't want to go to a sanctioned range, but want to shoot long distance, there is a lot of open ground south of Lava Beds National Monument. Nice campground at Medicine Lake and many areas that you can reach out long distance. From there north into Oregon toward Bly, Or, there are lots of places that are Ntl Forest or BLM where you can shoot squeekers or rock chucks to 1000. Some ideas for you. Most parks referenced above have web sites that you can use to glean more info.

check the range at Coalinga, I know it is farther than you want to travel. They have camping facility's there. They have a web site. As suggested look at ranges in northern Nevada or take a trip to look.

I've shot at both Jackson County and Josephine County Sports Parks... GREAT ranges! I don't know if the White City (Jackson County) range is even still open... I haven't seen a Highpower schedule from them in years.

Thanks for the leads! They're going on my map of places to follow up!

You're right, bit of a longer drive than ideal... but it's going on my list of places to check out! Thanks!

A friend of mine from Grants Pass is shooting long range at the White City park. He is matching his specialty pistols against the long range rifle shooters. I do not know when they shoot, but he has been pretty active so they are still open.....so keep looking for a schedule or access there.
