new to the extreme accuracy game

I have been shooting and hunting for 30 years and have always strived to print small groups. I have always used factory guns and am now looking into new a barrel for my Win M70 243. i am thinking of a Pac Nor #6 1-9 @ 26", a rifle basix trigger and a boyds JRS. I have a friend who has built some great guns in his own shop at home, retired tool and die guy with lathe and mill and all the indexing tools to go with them) He has also cut chambers and blued actions. I am looking for a gun that can do ground hog to whitetail deer. To about 5oo yards on the hogs 300 for deer. What do you think..........

I would go with a faster twist to shoot 105-115 bullets the 243 has plenty of powder capacity to drive them to 3000fps and beyond also the added weight / higher BC will help your down range performance

DinoS,

I use a 6BR for groundhog in VA. you can run out 600 to 700yds with 70 gr bullets. I also use a 6BRX,6BR IMP) for deer. The BRX will run 243 velocity or a little more, it will run a 105 gr 3050 f/S.

A 243AI may be a better choice for Deer. you should be able to run a 100 gr big game bullet 3300 to 3400 f/s. And use a 87 Vmax at 3500 to 3500 f/S for groundhog out to 1000 yds. The 87 Vmax Hammer Hogs. A 9 tw will be able to shoot the 105 Amax, good for long range hogs.

Dino, either a standard 243 or the 243AI will fill the bill for a great combo gun. For deer a hundred grain Partition would work great but don't overlook the Berger 105 VLD, they are just awesome on deer and for Hogs @ 500 yds the 87 V-Max or 90 Bergers are outstanding. In my personel 243AI with a 9 twist Hart Barrel, I shoot 107 SMK's @ 3238 fps.works great to 1000yds. If you want to shoot something heavier than 105 to 107 grains, you would need a slightly faster twist, 8 to 8.5. Good Luck with the new build, hope it's a real stinger.

Thanks for the input, the 243AI may be what I go with. For no other reason at this point in time because no one else I know has one. If I am going to build why not do something unique. The throat depth, do the Berger VLS's touch or jump into the lands for better performance. Also what do you guys or gals if there are any here think about the 6500 Elite from Bushnell. They have 80 MOA adjustments. My daughters cant wait to shoot what I build, They both love hunting and shooting,

I have been reading some threads about feeding problems with short actions with AI's. I guess my thoughts now are do I sell the Winchester Featherweight 243 with the weaver and start fresh with a Stevens. This option would give me some cash for parts as well as the new stevens. Your thoughts please...All barrels and other improvements are open. How would you build my gun.

AI cartridges are not known for being easily fed from magazines. The 40 degree shoulder will often hang up.

One other cartridge to consider is the 6mm Remington. Its shoulder angle is good for mag feeding and has more case capacity than the 243. Lots of power for medium game. I would likewise implore you to go 1:8 twist. This gives you the latitude to use everything from 87-108 grain bullets with excellent results. 1:9 do not handle long bullets like the VLD's very well.

Typically, VLD bullets work best in firm land contact however there are exceptions to every rule. I would have the chamber throated for the VLD's and this will allow you to use everything.

As for the action, whatever spackles your crack. The Stevens, while not an altogether "refined" action, is more than suitable for a project such as you are contemplating.

The plain vanilla .243 or the 6mm Remington both do a fine job on deer at 300 yards. Shot placement is the key - they are both lethal at that range.

Varmints with either of them? How far away can you hit 'em??? They'll do the job at ridiculously long ranges.

I'd build off your Win 70 action if it was my rifle. Many precision rifles have been built off the Win Model 70 - long a favorite with the NRA Highpower match rifle shooters.

Regards, Guy

What are thoughts of two barrels. I was reading and thinking of 7mm 08 or other as well. Which calliber's can be built with this bolt face. I am new to this........all posts welcome.
