Feral Hogs: Exotic Game

My state of inhabitance is Michigan, and as such, I abhor invasive piggies from visiting and especially from staying and setting-up breeding campsites. We couldn't control Carp, so how are we to stop Hogs? Maybe we could accept Wild Hogs as our state animal, such as Texas may soon have to do. Hogs eat Deer out-of-house-and-home, so soon Michigan will have more hogs than deer. Cliffy

G'day Rich, OZ is a wide-open continent where beasties rule. Exterminating anything would be impossible. Look at the Cane Toad take-over. If one cannot stop a toad, how could one expect to inhibit a hog? Bounties don't work anywhere, in my opinion. A small army of dedicated hunters, with no closed seasons, won't dent an established species. Watch for future Gray Wolf Hybrid infestation in the US of A, and see how we bumble that one: already too late. I don't even believe hunters made passenger pigeons go extinct, since some natural cause had to create their demise. Look at our crow situation in the US. Those noisy, annoying, destructive creatures are here to stay, along with CARP and Zebra Mussels. I live very near Lake Michigan, so I care about such critters. Cliffy

well Dom/Cliffy.. i'll try an do my part...Ha HA..!
we're setting up for another hog hunt. This time a closer area, Brunswick cnty. on 1700 acre private property deal. The hunts will be a one
long day without a overnight stay. Hunting should start at 5:AM.. till dark. probablly a late morning break then out again in the afternoon

only 4 of us instead of the original 9 which i think was too many the last time, we checked out the place and there seems to be hog tracks everywhere. They also put out sweet potato and corn bait.. using movable [not by us] ladder tree stands, some are doubles as well as a
couple of ground blinds, talking with this guy we all agreed he seems to know his hogs, he claims the thick underbrush surrounding the
stands permits the hogs to feed in the daylight hours. the other place was not as intersting an a lot less mud here in the new... Lol's
no expert here being only the second hunt for hogs but this set-ups looks a lot better.. but still no guaranteeeeeeeeeeeeeeee's....!

Here is an Email from a friend in Wisc.----------

One farmer that did hunt them, hunted out of a tree stand
at 11 PM. He had a wire set up - with tin cans. And, when the
noise got constant he turned on a flood light and opened up.
First time out he got three. He said there were about fifty of
them. That Spring the hogs actually followed him when he
was planting corn and ate the seed corn faster than he could
plant it. And, he couldn't keep up with the hunting night after
night so he quit hunting them and planted soybean instead
of corn - in the one field that was isolated and close to the
woods.
==================================

Sounds like a real problem. Corn fed hogs sound tasty
to me, but I think hunting alone can't control them.
Maybe they could send these nasty suckers to Iran to root
out terrorists. They are afraid of pigs.:D Or, train them for
Air Port security. They could be very useful in the War on
terrorists. It would be fun to see a suicide bomber surounded
by a pack of attack trained big ugly wild hogs. Hogs love to
eat garbage.

Aloha Rich,

Sounds Like its a good deal my friend, Will you be going soon? I wish you the best of luck and hope you get something this time. Either way hoping for the full report when you get back.

Aloha,

Dom

Ah... yes soon.. mar 3rd... i don't think i'll be up to it if rains though, its supose to be fun an that last trip wasn't all that great, hopefully it will be a clear dry day

thanks for the luck Dom... it helps, a report [maybe a good one ] will come soon after ;)

Rich

edit:
Oooops thats mar 4th

Living in Paradise has some drawbacks? Rain is one I'm familiar with afield. Pigs may like rain, but I don't. My scope tends to fog-up and/or becomes difficult to see through. Don't tell me some special scope sheds all moisture, since I don't have one of those masterpieces of perfection. I have a great scope for normal conditions. Soaking wet clothing dampens my spirit. Update...
after 1 cancellation due to weather 4 of us finally made the hunt yesterday.. it was a longgggg day.. we started out 5AM an i got home near 11pm ..
officially i'm a pig hunter .. it was after 7pm i shot this porker on the run at about 75yrds, there 4 in a line, for some reason they were really book'n, i pick the 1st one.. i had a nice broadside shot aiming for the head/ear an hit it just a little back in the neck, kindly i placed another round in the head, it didn't look all that big in the scope till we started to drag it, estimated it was about 80pound i was in nice two seater tree stand .. watched a bobcat earlier but the it wasn't in season so i had to pass on it... woulda made a nice mount though...
we got the pig back to camp .. skinned an quarter it.. this morn it went to the butcher.. will see how meat in pounds it comes to
one fella shot a little piglet that went in the freezer we gonna roast/BBQ the whole thing when we can all get together again
i'll post a pic when the camera charges up :) ;)

thats the exit hole

Hey Cliffy,

A .223 can definately be a pig gun. As long as you have a tough enough bullet, I dont see why anything in the 55 grain plus bullet would not be more than effecient. Especially when it comes to head and neck shots. I have some 70 grain barnes loaded for pigs.

I built a 6.8 SPC AR that I use for hog hunts in texas. From what I have seen, the 6.8 is probably the best calibre in an AR for pigs. The big bore cartridges work great, but the 6.8 really shines with low recoil and excellent stopping power.

Hey Rich,
Welcome to the family of hoghunter's ;D!!! Nice piggie you got there sounds like you made a great shot. Congrats again on your successful hog hunt and youre right it sounds and looks like you had a long day indeed.

Aloha,
Dom

Dom
thanks man... its been a while coming... but i happen so quick after the whole day
it was worth it though... we'll be looking for another place to try out now.. Lol's

Aloha to you,

Hi everyone.
Here in MI you can go to
http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10363-155439--,00.html
and read up on the little buggers.
All you need is a hunting license of any type. I was thinking of going to the local farm co op and asking if any farmers have been seeing any. I bet a farmer who has them would love to let someone on to the farm to get rid of some.
I shot one with my TC Contender pistol in 30-30 Ackley Improved. Still have a little left in the freezer. The DNR has a page posted that shows all the counties that have them. Could talk to a CO and see if they could point you in the right direction as well.
I know Texas has a larger population of pigs than deer.

msu33 - Dittos on the 6.8 SPC. I built one with an 18" bbl. this past winter, and with the right bullet, it's a tack-driver. So far, the most accurate bullet has been the S115MK, which unfortunately, probably won't expand, even on a hog. Other bullets tried include Hornady's 110BTHP (poor accuracy in my carbine) and Speer 90 TNT. I dunno for sure, but would suspect that the TNT's thin jacket would make it a poor choice, even for critters as small as feral hogs.

Fortunately, we don't have feral hogs here in west central Kansas, though I've been hearing reports of them down in the Meade/Ashland area, SE of Dodge City. I've also heard of people introducing feral hogs into areas just to have something to hunt - personally, I wouldn't take kindly to someone stupid enough to pull a stunt like that around here.

Flatlander, Try the the 100 grain accubonds for deer, and the 85 grain barnes for pigs. Barnes is also coming out with a 95 grain TTSX, which is what I used on a pig in texas this past month. All of these are tough and devastating on pigs and deer.

I use the 110 accubonds on deer, and when I use those up I will switch to the 100grain accubonds. The accubonds are devastating on deer. I also use the 110 ttsx for pigs, but they are a bit too long. Barnes and Nosler both have started making .270 calibre bullets with the 6.8 in mind. For best results stick to the 100 grain and smaller bullets. Depending on barrel twist and chamber, you can push these rounds out to the 2900 fps mark.

Aloha Rich,

Goodluck in your search for another place to hunt! Heres one we picked up yesterday very exciting indeed almost had my partner for breakfast ;D but one of the dogs came and saved the day ;D
