Feral Hogs: Exotic Game

Aloha Rich,

Heres another one the dogs got a couple weeks ago was a chase but they finally stopped him and I was able to stick him only 2 dogs were on him. When he seen me coming he broke from the dogs and came at me quick but I was able to grab him.
He's a nice color we dont catch ones this color very often.

How many, JohnWayne? Are you keeping count for me? Is it how many regarding .223 Remington with 60 grain Nosler Partitions? Or how many with .243 Winchester fare? I don't even bother to keep count. I found a new pet round today: no, not whilst shooting a pig, but at a hapless bowling pin. Could barely find the entry "wound" but the exist hole was savage. .243 Caliber hole going in with a 3.5" hole coming out. For fully 3.5 inches in diameter, the rearward heavy plastic was totally gone, while the interior maple was absolutely shredded, but the entry hole was .243" diameter. What did this dastardly deed? A .243" diameter Winchester bore driving a 62 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade at 3850 fps pushed by 47.2 grains of Alliant RL-15 with a C.O.L. of 2.625" and ignited via a CCI 250 LRM primer in a Remington Brass Case. Alliant powder works okay! It solidly dusted and blew-away my experimentation regarding Hodgdon H414 comparision powder, yet recoil remained MILD. Next, I'll continue my Barnes TSX 85 grain experimentation, now at 3330 fps. When I can safely exist a muzzle velocity of 3500 fps, I'll know I've found the peak of performance for deer and feral hogs regarding .243 Winnie Pooh super performance. Regarding H414 and H4350 powder, I see NO clear difference downrange. Regarding RL-15 with less than 90 grain bullets, WOW! AND no, I'm not done with 62 grain Barnes perfction just yet, since it's merely early spring 2010. Cliffy

Luv the great Hog pics, and some day I will become computer savy enough to post some pictures. May fifth, 2010 will be the surgery date to correct my right hip joint pain, so I may tread afield again with relative COMFORT, instead of incredible pain. Cliffy

We don't care how many bowling pins you shoot cliffy. We want to know where all your so called knowledge has been gathered from. Have you ever shot a hog or a praire dog? It seems to all of us that you just spread B.S.

Same tact used by our politicians: when faced with a difficult question they do not want to answer, they just ignore the question!

Ganging up on me again? Okay, I can take it. I already mentioned many PDog kills in Wyoming utilizing my .177 caliber air rifle. Since I lived and fished and hunted in Utah and Wyoming for several years, just because I moved back to Illinois and Michigan, doesn't mean I quit hunting. Hunting does not allow me to set-up a chronograph and experiment with specific loads to enhance everyone's knowledge regarding small caliber potency. I do enjoy shooting paper way out there. I'm sure you guys will have more questions, so SHOOT. Currently, I find it extremely painful to walk 300 yards and then BACK to set-up targets. THIS too shall be remedied in May of this year. All my labs are done as of today. I'll begin cleaning my canoe for June fishing tomorrow. Cliffy

shoot them in the eye ear triangle with any centerfire and they are done. low shoulder or just behind with 243 and up works great to.use a heavy for the caliber bullet for body shots .Ive shot them with 40gr 22-250's up to 300rum with 200gr a-frames,38,357 and 40's. all still or stand hunting,no dogs.bullet placement is always the key. they will get spooky and go nocturnal if pressured

Hey RichG,

How you been my friend been a bit since ive talked with you have you been out hunting lately?

Got a boar last weekend that hammered one of my best help dogs cost me $4,000 in vet bills :'( but hes worth every penny.

He got hit in the gut pretty bad so hes down for a few weeks hope he pulls through. He ended up stopping and fighting the by himself so he took a bit of punishment. To his credit though even in his condition he held on till I got there and put the boar down. I really LOVE my dogs and would give my all for them as theyve done the same for me in the past and present some even gave thier life.

Take care and wishing you the best,

Dom

Aloha Rich,

He is getting better by the day his appetite has returned and he's getting stronger as well. I drain his wounds every day and dress them and give him his meds. He's a good old dog and have battled countless boars through the years but this last one almost took him with him. He was whining and trying to get in the truck this morning to go and was a bit upset at me leaving him home. When we got home today after the hunt he came up to me jumped up on my lap and put his mouth by my ear and gave out a short low growl, licked my face and jumped down. He always does that when hes not pleased with me LOL! sometimes I think hes human he know me so well. Sorry to hear about your daughters dog thats a bummer its always a hard thing to do I wish her the best.

Skeet huh my friend keeps buggin me to go with him but work keeps gettin in the way. Ive seen it and it looks like alot of fun but id probably miss way more than I hit LOL! Its all in fun though. Goodluck at your shoot I wish you the best.

Take care,

Dom

Hey Dom..
glad to hear it.. they do know whats go'n on if you can read an animal its easy to tell... i haven't had a dog in many yrs but i did have a few very long term pals that listened better then people i mis having one an a lab my be in the near future.. mite be a good time to think about retiring your wounded hero an take him on easy ventures to keep busy... he sounds way to good to loose after all this..?

skeet well i just got started i only average about 14 out of 25... no laugh'n...! anyway its one more thing to keep outside an looking foward to tomorrow
i set up my new a loader last nite an managed to get 3 boxes made ... learning the new art of Mecs plus cleaning up mis feld shot an powder Ha ah !... interesting its so different then rifle an pistol although the end result is the same... weds. i'll get a chance to see if i did a good job or not... Lol's

Aloha Rich,

Aloha Rich...
I tried retiring him before he's having nothing of it he becomes unbearable if left home when we go hunting. He's kinda like me probably wants to go to the happy huntin grounds while hunting LOL!

Man in my opinion 14 outta 25 aint bad thats about 10 more than id hit HAHAHA!!! Goodluck on your shoot tomorrow and im sure your loads will be fine. Ive nevr loaded shotgun looks very interesting though.

Aloha,

Dom

Dom
guess he'd rather do it that way then lay around get'n crotchety.. just like Some people..Lol's :)

well it all worded all 3 boxes... not one mis fire... lov'n it
it worked so well i came home an loaded 11 more boxes...
now i need to load 200 rounds of rifle stuff [2 giff""" ones]for the other match... tis tak'n a-hole lot of $ & X.. but what else do i have to do ?

Aloha

Rich,
LOL!!!! Yep I believe so, he gets real ornery if left home from hunting. He's been Ok these last couple weeks though as I guess he realizes hes hurt and hes staying home for a real reason. I dont think he feels age is a good enough reason LOL!!!

WOW! Great to hear about your shooting and your reloads thats awesome. What type if any case prep do you need for shotshells? I'd assume they might be a little quicker if you dont have to size, trim, chamfer etc. just curious?

Take Care and Good Shooting,

Dom

Dom...
i think maybe he is get'n coy ... i bet he's watch'n your every move for some possible new tactics... :) good to hear his is doing well , slow is better

we finally got together yesterday an BBQ'd that little piglet.. wife's included was the first the wife's met, Interesting afternoon... turned out to be a big hit everyone ate an said it was good.. they had it on the fire for about 4hrs ... i think it was to long .. but not bad, maybe in the fall we'll do it again i've got some of my pig left.

the Mec... came about 95% set up an has had a few bugs over the learning process.. the machine is running 100% now, but there are some human errors to deal with... as far as the cases/hulls there isn't any prep just a visual look to make sure the hull is in ok shape an separate the diff""" brands... my machine does a resize in the first step, 6 steps in all, so it starts to pop out a loaded round every pull... much easier then metallic cases an faster, but you have to train your eye an keep watch on a couple of thing... the usual stuff.. i ran out of powder once an had to back track the cases, lucky i caught that quick... ran out primers too... powder all the place stop an clean that up ... simple to forget stuff once it gets going... now that i've made most of the errors it works really good an almost fun
be well an keep an eye on the pooch..

Aloha Rich...
LOL!!! Yeah I wouldnt doubt it he definately is watching me thats for sure.

Thats great that y'all got together and ate up some pork :D 4 hrs is a little long for a piglet I believe though...But at least it was edible :D I had to laugh when you said the wifes met each other and it was an interesting afternoon :D

That sounds cool! Ive never done shotgun reloading as ive hadnt a need too as I dont shoot much shotgun here. Theres just not much to do for shotgunning wish there was though as it is fun when we do go out and shoot. LOL! I bet id be the same way just keep crankin on that handle and then realize DARN the powder and PRIMERS ran out LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can see myself doing that all too easily hehehehehe!

Take care,

My surgery is over, and I'm getting stronger, if still on pain pills, so I won't burdon anyone with my recovery details. Since I can't drive or hunt currently, I started handloading .308 Winchester 165 grain Barnes TSX-BT bullets with three different powder flavors: RL-15; H4350; H414. All told, I'm ripe for experimentation downrange. I, however, do not own a .308 Winchester caliber rifle to date, but I will buy one when I find the proper match of price and quality. Texas beckons, and that venture will happen this fall. Cliffy

Cliffy glad to hear you are doing well! Hope your 308 adventure will go well for you. I like the 308. It has many uses and is capable of shooting many different bullet wieghts accurately! If I can help out in anyway let me know! I have recently found good results with the 175 bergers with Varget, and the 190s with RL 17. Anyway like I said glad to hear your surgery went well! YOU OLD FART! Where's That 243!! Just kidding! Had to throw that in there! Good Luck to you and your 308! Load that 165 and bust some HOG's!!!!
